Senior English--4/17/2013

Jump Off
--Pick up the sheet entitled "Personal Connection Review--Unit #8" from the front table.  Read the directions and begin working while Mr. Martin takes attendance.

--Reminder: Any individuals who did not meet the Tuesdays with Morrie Analysis Essay revisions due date for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio will receive referrals until the assignment is completed to mastery, as Mr. Martin does not want you to lose the opportunity to graduate!

Review -- Personal Connections--Vocabulary Unit #8
--complete the sheet as directed
--draw cards and share
--Finish preparing for the Unit #8 assessment, which will take place at the beginning of next class.  Including this review sheet as part of your review process wouldn't hurt! 
 
Transition
--Pick up the half-sheet entitled "Arguing for a Position Research Paper--Feedback Analysis" and an index card from the front table. 
 
Writing Worskhop -- Arguing for a Position Research Paper
Cumulative Writing Portfolio Work
--independent work--complete the half-sheet using essay and pages of the rubric--Mr. Martin models first
--whole-group share-out--Mr. Martin creates a list on the front board/models where appropriate
--on the back of your half-sheet, develop a plan for revising--Mr. Martin models first
Paper Presentation Preparation
--on your index card, prepare a “presentation” using the following checklist of “must includes”:
*Your thesis statement
*The strongest point you include in support of your thesis statement (be specific!)
*An explanation of the main opposition you address and how you attempted to refute the opposition
*The most surprising/interesting piece of information you discovered during the research process

Presentations/Discussion -- Arguing for a Position Research Papers
Protocol
--card drawn--student shares four items from checklist and opens the floor up for questions (if all four checklist items adequately addressed, 1 point is earned)
--peers ask questions (e.g., Did you find out anything about…?  What about…? [playing Devil’s Advocate]  Etc.)--1 point is earned for asking a question that pushes the discussion forward/1 point is earned for providing a thoughtful response to a question (about one’s own argument OR a peer’s)
--CLASS PARTICIPATION SCORING SCALE: 1 point = 80%; 2 points = 90%; 3 points = 100% (once three points are earned, a student may no longer contribute to discussion for the remainder of the block)--this is your first grade for Quarter 4!
--process repeats until all presentations have been delivered
--Anyone need Mr. Martin to model before we begin?

HW
--Finish preparing for the Unit #8 vocabulary assessment, which will take place at the beginning of next class.  Don't forget about our incentive plan!
--If you did not present your research paper in class today, expect to do so next class--prepare via your index card.
