English 10 Honors--12/3/2012

Jump Off
--Pick up the Short Story Unit Exam from the front table and begin working.  Good luck!

--Baby Step #3: Listen carefully to your words between now and next class.  Count how many times you use reactive language, such as "You make me...", "I have to...", "Why can't they...", "I can't...".  Then, take note of the reactive language that you use the most.  Be prepared to talk about this baby step next class.

--If you need to revise for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio, think about when you might schedule an appointment with Mr. Martin (the sooner, the better!).
--Pick up an index card from the front table.  On the index card, write down the definitions of as many of the four parts of speech written on the front board as you can remember from memory.

--Take out your "Short Story Unit Information Sheet," which was handed out on the first day of the unit. Purposefully re-read the sheet, your purpose being to prepare for today's unit wrap-up/review discussion.  As you do so, I would expect to see you rummaging through materials, looking through your notes, etc.  You have 10 minutes to complete this task.

--Mr. Martin shares list of students needing to revise for the Writing Portfolio.  On Friday of this week, Mr. Martin will write referrals for all students who have yet to revise and meet with him and need to for the sake of the portfolio, so TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS.  Any student with a "mastery mark" on the first assignment and not planning to do any additional revisions can submit the essay to Mr. Martin for the Writing Portfolio.

--It might not be a bad idea to analyze your own Controlling Idea Paragraph in the same manner that we did today.  (Do you have a meaningful topic sentence?  Do you tie back often?  Are you using good vocabulary, transitions, and a variety of sentence types?  Etc.)  It is safe to assume that you will be crafting this type of literary analysis paragraph on the exam next class :).

Senior English--Tuesdays with Morrie Analysis Essay Ideas


  • The introduction could start off with a definition of "literary nonfiction" using information from the first source included within the assignment packet.
  • The thesis statement for the essay should probably include the title Tuesdays with Morrie, the term "literary communion," and a brief response to the "so what?" question.
  • Potential topics for discussion within the essay include: a definition of literary nonfiction, a definition of literary communion, an argument proving that Tuesdays with Morrie contains literary communion (and therefore is literary nonfiction), and an explanation of "what Albom was up to" when he decided to purposefully use food/meals throughout the memoir.
