English 10 Honors--11/5/2012

Jump Off 
--Pick up the "Drawing Study Strategy" sheet from the front table.

--Open your vocabulary book to page 35.  Look through the list of words, and put a star next to all of the words that you are pretty confident about knowing already.

Instruction -- Vocabulary Unit #3

--go over Unit #3 word list (page 35) and five "Whimsical Words"
--Mr. Martin models the "Drawing Study Strategy" on the front board
--independent work time--implement the "Drawing Study Strategy" (5 mins.)
--share out (draw three cards)--add up to three more words/pictures via volunteers
--For HW, begin preparing for the Unit #3 assessment--make sure to familiarize yourself with the “Whimsical Words”--review next class (time permitting)--assessment on Friday


Transition -- pick a number from the front table to determine your seed--names/title abbreviations written on brack

Activity -- Short Story Madness
Directions:
--For each game, two students "playing" read summaries.
--All students in class then vote for a winner via heads down/hands up vote.
--Winner advances to the next round.
--Proceed in this manner until two finalists are determined.
Transition -- unit information sheet up/read through together in order to align our minds with contents and purpose of the Short Story Unit

Mini-Lesson -- “The Masque of the Red Death”
--take a thoughtful look at pictures via slides
--Transition--“Short Story Analysis Sheet” and literature book up
--purposefully read “The Masque…” (use “Short Story Analysis Sheet”)--keep our ideas from earlier in the mini-lesson in mind
--engage in discussion via notes written on “Short Story Analysis Sheet”

Closure
--note-taking (Short Story as a Literary Form, Allegory as a Literary Term, and Romanticism as a Literary Movement)—date the page in your notebook (11/5/2012)
--wrap-up discussion

HW
--Be working on revisions of the Unique Peer Writing Assignment for your Writing Portfolio. I hope to have some more submissions this week!
--Begin preparing for the Unit #3 assessment--make sure to familiarize yourself with the “Whimsical Words”--review next class (time permitting)--assessment on Friday.
