Senior English--11/6/2012

Jump Off
--Pick up an index card from the front table.  On the index card, write your  name and a random nickname.  Mr. Martin will use this nickname to convey important information to you in the classroom in a non-threatening manner; therefore, you should not pick a nickname that others in the class can easily link to you.
--Pick up the "Poetry Analysis--'Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night'" sheet from the front table.  Take a look at the contents of the sheet, and be able to answer this question in a few minutes: What is our purpose during the reading of this poem?

--agenda/HW


Activity -- Poetry Analysis--"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night"
--read "Do Not Go..." aloud twice--get the gist
--read poem aloud a third time--project text on front board--explication modeling for stanza #1
--independent explication/respond to "Questions to Consider"
--share out items from independent explications

Transition -- form a circle/bring your "Poetry Analysis..." sheet, Tuesdays... book, and purposeful reading notes

Oral Reading/Discussion -- Tuesdays with Morrie
--ice breaker first (What would you leave in your will for the person you care about the most? OR When trick-or-treating as a kid, was there any candy that you didn't like to get? OR What is your "buying-into-our-current-culture-'guilty pleasure'"?)
--Reminder: "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale"
--draw cards--all students make initial contributions first--don't forget about the "Questions to Consider" from the poem--Mr. Martin jots ideas on the board
--engage in "free-flowing" discussion

--Mr. Martin answers a few questions at the end
--What did you think of this method of dealing with a book?

Transition
--Re-row the desks/clear desks of all but a pencil (SEE MR. MARTIN IF YOU NEED A PENCIL)
