In the Door (3 mins.)
--Please sit at the desk with the following on it:

  • a strip of paper with two questions on it
  • an index card with your name on it
  • a copy of the "Free Reading Course Component--Book Surfing" sheet

Jump Off (8-10 mins.)

--concept of the Jump Off explained (an in-the-door protocol we will follow each class day this school year) and MODELED
  • Today's Jump Off
    • Please respond to the two questions on the strip of paper.  When you finish, walk your paper up to the front table and place it in the black basket.  Then, jot down group/band names and song titles on the back of the index card with your name on it.

--Engage in "Book Surfing" in an attempt to find the perfect read (unless you already have a book here in class today--begin reading if this is the case!).  Be prepared to verbalize your responses to the following questions:
  • What book did you pick?  Why?
--Engage in free reading for 15 minutes.  Be prepared to verbalize your response to the following prompt:
  • In my book, ... (summarize)

Before You Leave (remainder of class)

HW (Class Preparation)
--Please bring your free reading book to class daily between now and when you finish the book, which is due for completing at the end of Marking Period 2.  If you do not yet have something worth reading, see if you can find something before our next class block together.  (FYI: The high school library should be open next week, and I will try to find us some class time to swing over there!).  I will be checking your books in the near future!

--Make sure to SEE ME if you have any questions about anything from today's class.  Though I know it might be a little intimidating or seem "weird," you need to get used to advocating for yourself and become comfortable working with me and your other teachers ASAP! :)

English 10 Honors--2019-2020

ABBREVIATED SCHEDULE--CLASS ENDS AROUND 8:30

--concept of the Jump Off explained (an in-the-door protocol we'll follow each class day this year)
--Pick up each of the following from the front table (unless you already have some of the items):

  • "Important Information" document
  • "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts" document
--In pen or pencil on the back of your index card, jot down some of the music groups/bands that you listen to and/or some of your favorite songs.

    --I hand a paper bag to a random student--he/she then displays items from the bag on at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing

    --I further describe, explain, share anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction (also referring to the "Who is Mr. Martin?" bulletin board/PowerPoint)
