--A Note from Bruce Ballenger's The Curious Researcher:
  • "The closer [photographers get] to their subjects, the more they [begin] to see what they had never noticed before.  The same is true in writing.  As you move in for a closer look at some aspect of some larger [topic], you will begin to uncover information that you--and ultimately your readers--are likely to find less familiar and more interesting.  One writing phrase for this is narrowing your [topic]."

  • finish actively/purposefully reading the source that you began working with last class block as per the directions on the "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet.  Remember that ultimately, you are continuing to conduct research in order to develop a "focused knowledge" of your topic.  Think of it this way:

  • actively/purposefully read a second source in the same manner.
    • If you do not have a second source printed out and would prefer to read on paper, please SEE ME for a pass to the library.
    • all the while, work on narrowing your topic by zeroing in on the "right" inquiry question--perhaps a "Should..." question?--with the knowledge that the paper you will eventually write will be argumentative.  As such, you should be jotting down new questions/potential argumentative claims as they occur to you.
*WHEN YOUR NAME IS CALLED, MEET WITH ME AND...
    • SHARE YOUR ACTIVE/PURPOSEFUL READING NOTES AND ANSWER MY FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
    • DISCUSS YOUR FREE READING EXPERIENCE.*

    • Follow the directions on the halfsheet so that you can move toward developing a "focused knowledge"
      • A Note from Bruce Ballenger's The Curious Researcher:
        • "If working knowledge equips you to sustain a 1-minute dinner conversation on your topic, then focused knowledge is enough for you to make a 15- or 20-minute presentation to the rest of the class.  You'll probably be able to answer all of your classmates' questions.  You'll hardly be an expert, but you'll probably know a lot more about your topic than any of your peers...Focused knowledge is the product of smart research this week and the next, refining your search terms, knowing where to look for the most useful information, and using your time efficiently...Most important, especially at this point, are these two questions:
          1. Is this information relevant to my inquiry question?
          2. Does it change my question?"
