English 9--12/11/2012

Jump Off
--On an index card, write a complete sentence about “rain”.  Remember that in order to be a complete sentence, a string of words must have a “Subject” and a “Verb”.  Hold on to this index card, as you will be writing more information on it later in class.

Instruction -- Missing Comma in a Compound Sentence/Unnecessary Comma with a Coordinating Conjunction
--read through “Example” on sheet--Mr. Martin models on front board with sentences about rain
--read “Practice Area” together--students complete practice
--three students write sample properly punctuated compound sentences up on the front board--analyze together
--For HW, prepare for the quiz pertaining to this grammar rule, which will occur next class

Transition -- pick up “Literature Terms Pre-test” from the front table—complete the pre-test quietly and independently

Review/Instruction -- Literature Terms
--self-grade pre-tests
--Mr. Martin gathers data--what are our class needs in terms of review?
--definitions/examples shared as per needs
--divide and conquer--split up terms for application purposes
--independent work time--apply literature terms to Odyssey--Mr. Martin models
--small-group share as per like terms
--whole-group—share out
--For HW, review literature terms, especially those with which you are currently struggling--we will apply these terms throughout our upcoming short story work, and you will be expected to know/apply these terms on the 7 Habits Unit Exam

HW Time – Creating a Personal Mission Statement
--finish purposefully reading information from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens about Personal Mission Statements (BLOCK 4 ONLY)
--Mr. Martin finishes sharing his personal mission statement and related items
--work together to develop a plan for the assignment (Due date? Criteria? Grading? Will we share? Etc.)
--share ideas

Closure -- T-O-D
--On an index card, write your name.  Then, do the following from memory:
  • List as many of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective teens as you can.
  • Properly use at least one Unit #4 vocabulary word somewhere on your index card.
  • Include one properly punctuated compound sentence somewhere within your response.
Sharpening the Saw
--anecdotes about hard work and reactive language shared (time permitting)
 
HW
Optional assignments:
--Review literature terms, especially those with which you are currently struggling.  We will apply these terms throughout our upcoming short story work, and you will be expected to know/apply these terms on the 7 Habits Unit Exam.
--Purposefully read sections of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens in order to "beef up" your notes page.
Mandatory assignments:
--Prepare for the “Missing comma in a compound sentence/unnecessary comma with a coordinating conjunction” quiz, which will occur next class.
--Complete your Personal Mission Statement by Monday of next week.
