English 10 Honors--10/21/2013

Jump Off
--Open your vocabulary book to page 34. Look through the list of words and put a star next to all of the words that you are pretty confident about knowing already. Also, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the "Whimsical Words."

S. the C.

--In class today, we will mostly work on:
  • strengthening writing by revising, editing, rewriting, and/or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience. THIS STANDARD WILL BE ASSESSED VIA RESUBMITTED REVISED ESSAYS.
--agenda/HW
--pronounce each of the Unit #3 vocabulary words (pages 34-36) and the "Whimsical Words"
--For HW, begin preparing for the Unit #3 quiz, which will take place this Friday. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the “Whimsical Words.”
--Mr. Martin shares list of students needing to revise for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio

Transition
--Take your notebook back out so that we can finish the notes/mini-lessons that we mostly finished last class.  If you're (crazy?) like Mr. Martin, you might want to write today's date (10/21/2013) underneath the date from last class since, well, it's taken us more than one day to cover the material.

Writing Workshop -- Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews Notes/Mini-lessons
--finish taking notes/completing mini-lessons as per PowerPoint slides--this information will prove helpful when revising your writing pieces!
  • Block 2: Pick back up with final slide (revising a sentence ending with a preposition)
  • Block 4: Pick back up with the second-to-last slide (a "tight" body paragraph)
--oral reading of a writing piece that, overall, is solid--jot down "pros" in notebook for discussion
--briefly discuss sample writing piece
--scored writing pieces returned--in your notebook, make a list of "pros" and "grows" as you process through Mr. Martin's feedback (it might help to categorize your notes under the headings Meaning, Development, Organization, Language Use, and Conventions)--MR. MARTIN MODELS
--feedback processing/revision time--make appointments with Mr. Martin for Cumulative Writing Portfolio-related work ASAP (for the rest of class and beyond)
--What questions do you still have?  Mr. Martin wants to make sure that you are set up for success!

Closure -- SMART Goal

--Set a SMART Goal for revising your writing piece--What is a SMART Goal? What might a SMART Goal pertaining to this directive look like?
MR. MARTIN WILL TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR SMART GOAL WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED CREATING IT.

HW Time

--meetings with Mr. Martin will occur during this time

HW

--Begin preparing for the Unit #3 quiz, which will take place this Friday.  Make sure to familiarize yourself with the “Whimsical Words.” It might be a good idea to read "Finding the Facts: Techniques of Modern Crime-Scene Investigation" on pages 32 and 33 as a starting point (similar to what we did in class with Unit #1), especially since next class, we will work together on using context clues to determine meaning, a skill practiced/built when purposefully reading these provided pieces of non-fiction.
--Bring your vocabulary book again next class.
--The due date for submitting a revised Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio is November 18th (THIS IS A NEW DATE [AN EXTENSION, IF YOU WILL]--approximately one month from today)--YOU MUST schedule a meeting with Mr. Martin to go over your revisions; simply handing in the revisions is unacceptable as per the protocol.  When time permits, meetings can/will occur during class time.
--Finish purposefully reading TOMatS--continue with high-quality Post-its (or another form of notes) for discussion:
  • The basics (characters, setting, conflict, etc.)
  • Christological figure
  • Hero as a literary term
  • Hemingway's writing style (for which he is famous!)
  • Intertextuality with The Alchemist--they're the same story!
  • Stoicism
  • Irony and paradox (make sure to distinguish between these two terms)
