English 9--10/26/2018 & 10/29/2018

Jump Off (5 mins.)
--Please consider the claim below quietly and independently.  Do you agree or disagree?  Why?  (Feel free to pick up an index card from the front table upon which to gather your thoughts.)

Since most children and young adults imitate the impactful adults in their lives--parents, guardians, aunts/uncles, teachers, etc.--as well as other socializing influences, adults should not play violent video games in front of younger people, nor should adults allow children under the age of 18 to play violent video games.

Activity/Looking Ahead -- Take a Stand and Article of the Week/ThinkCERCA #1 ("Shooting in the Dark") (15-30 mins.)

--explanation of the protocol for Take a Stand (a quick activity we'll likely use several more times this school year):
  • Momentarily, I will make a debatable statement:
    • If you agree with the statement, STAND UP next to your desk.
    • If you strongly agree with the statement, STAND ON your desk chair.
    • If you disagree with the statement, STAY SEATED in your desk chair.
    • If you strongly disagree with the statement, SIT ON THE FLOOR next to your desk.

  • show your position (stand, sit, etc.)
  • cold-calling--students randomly selected to briefly explain their stance (no more than three sentences)
--share rationale behind the Article of the Week (see Google Slides again)
