English 9--10/22/2018 & 10/23/2018

Jump Off (3-5 mins.)
--Pick up a copy of the document titled "Parts of Speech Review" from the front table and flip to the second page, which contains a chart.  Then, using your background knowledge and your pre-assessment from a few classes ago, begin filling in the chart to help us "gear up" for today's lesson.  While we work with this document today, ask yourself this question: What part of speech is my laminated picture and/or word on my desk?  Feel free to flip your item over now!

Review Activity/Instruction -- The Grammar Hammer--Parts of Speech Review (30-35 mins.)
--drop the hammer--share routine/rationale with students and link to the writing that we've done so far this year and vocabulary

Control of Conventions: the extent to which the writing piece demonstrates command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling

--whole group: begin populating chart on SMART Board as per background knowledge (write in notes on your copy)
--independent: listen to the following rap and continue adding to your copy of the chart

--After putting away your "Parts of Speech Review" document in the "Grammar Hammer" section of your binder, pick up a highlighter and the "Parts of Speech--Ticket-Out-the-Door" document from the front table.  Complete the ticket-out-the-door quietly and independently.  Good luck!

--oral reading of "Directions" and MODELING
  • What should we consider from the school year so far (e.g., free reading, Membean, etc.)?
    • add to list on front board accordingly
--complete the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document quietly and independently as directed
--When you finish, place your self-assessment in the black basket on the front table and engage in free reading until class ends.

--NEXT CLASS (Wednesday, 10/24 [ACE] or Thursday, 10/25 [BDF]), I will formally check on your knowledge and understanding of the eight parts of speech by way of a quiz (matching parts of speech to definitions and application [highlighting as on pre-assessment]).  It might be in your best interest to review via the following website if you struggled on today's ticket-out-the-door:

--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  You have up until early December to finish your book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
