English 10--10/23/2018

Jump Off (8-10 mins.)
--Please find your name card and sit in the corresponding desk.  This is your new assigned seat in Room 203! :)
--Obtain your Chromebook from the cart in the back of the classroom.  After logging in, open a Google Doc and follow the directions below:
  • Conduct a Google search in order to answer the following questions:
    • What is a soft skill?
    • What are some examples of soft skills?  
      • I recommend typing in "soft skills needed for _____ [your potential future career]" in order to answer this question in a more "you-specific" manner!
    • Why are soft skills important?
  • Type your answers in your Google Doc.  Be prepared to share your findings with a partner and/or the entire class.

--What are soft skills, and why do they matter?
  • share out as per the "Jump Off" and populate the whiteboard
--familiarize ourselves with the Livonia framework for reporting soft skills

  • Defining "inconsistent"
  • Sample comments shared for further clarification
  • Sample "students" described
--Transition
  • Fully shutdown your Chromebook, return it to the proper slot, and plug it in via the proper cord--I'm watching yoouuu! :)
  • Pick up a copy of the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document from the front table.
--oral reading of "Directions" and MODELING
  • What should we consider from the school year so far (e.g., free reading, Membean, etc.)?
    • add to list on front board accordingly
    • a few sample student responses shared from earlier in the school day
--complete the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document quietly and independently as directed
  • I will call over students alphabetically and share GPAs, observations, etc.
--When you finish, place your self-assessment in the black basket on the front table and engage in free reading until further directions are given.

Transition (3-5 mins.)
--At the end of today's block, students will be picked at random to share their pictures for the "It's in my nature..." wall.  Please spend a few minutes preparing to share if you are one of the students yet to go!  If you already shared, please continue free reading.

Old Business -- Exploring the Essential Questions (remainder of class)
--finish preparing to share quietly and independently
--last few pictures shared:
  • Why did you select the picture that you did?  What is your current understanding of what human beings are really like?

--WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FROM MEMBEAN 10/19-10/25; HOWEVER, YOU CAN STILL TRAIN IN THIS WINDOW OF TIME (AND ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DO SO TO RECOVER SOME CREDIT IF YOU HAVE FALLEN BEHIND)!
HW (Class Preparation/Take-Home Assessment)
--Scan back through your Post-its for Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 of Animal Farm (up to the end of page 25).  Expect any or all of the following to occur next time that we meet (and "kick off" Marking Period 2): 
  • collection of your Post-its for assessment purposes
  • a reading assessment
    • Please keep in mind that I have not yet checked on your ability to define "allegory" and apply its definition to the novella!
  • a discussion geared around your Post-its 
HW (Class Preparation)
--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  You have up until early December to finish your book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
