English 10 Honors--10/25/2018

Jump Off
--Please take out the following:
  • the "Perrine's Story and Structure--'Reading the Story' (pgs. 3-9)" sheet
  • your notebook opened to the section in which you made predictions about symbols several classes back
  • your "first-draft read" copy of "The Masque of the Red Death"
--Draw a line in your notebook under your last section of notes.  Label the next section of your notes as follows: "'The Masque of the Red Death'--Initial Reading"
--Prepare for today's initial "The Masque of the Red Death" share-out by looking through your "Short Story Analysis Sheet" and purposeful reading notes with this question in mind: When reading "The Masque of the Red Death" for the first time, what resonated?  I have written my example on the front board.  If you have time, write an item on the board yourself and put your initials next to your contribution (which will save us time later!).

S. the C.
--"Style/Voice..." sheet handed out/directions given for next class
--agenda/HW

Transition
--Form a numerical-order-from-least-to-highest-by-birthday (just day, not month!) circle out of the desks.  (For example, my birthday is October 6th, so I will be a "6" when we organize.)

  • Ella C.
  • Ethan D.
--finish engaging in discussion/notetaking about the reading titled "Reading the Story":
  • distinguish between commercial and literary fiction
  • begin to answer these questions: What is a short story? and How does purposefully reading a short story enhance our understanding of the human experience?
  • analyze works that we've read in the past--commercial or literary fiction?
--continue engaging in discussion/notetaking by "dumping" potential meanings on the front board for each of the pre-reading pictures
  • I WILL ASSESS CONTRIBUTIONS VIA THE "DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTION RATING SCALE"
--Literary Analysis Activity (Phase 1): discuss/add to the bulleted list on the whiteboard/jot down notes in notebook

Literary Analysis Activity (Phase 2) -- “The Masque of the Red Death”
--distinguish between an initial purposeful reading and a true "reading literature like a champ" reading via the following link:

http://writingcenter.fas.harvard.edu/pages/how-do-close-reading

--Transition
  • Pick up a copy of "'Reading Literature Like a Champ!' Framework" sheet.
--set our purpose for our second reading of "The Masque of the Red Death" via...
  • an understanding of the expectations garnered via the "Reading Literature Like a Champ! Framework"
  • an exemplar (think-aloud).
--sections of the story assigned to each student for close reading/annotating--independent and/or small-group work time (depending on how you choose to operate)--close reading/annotating of assigned section of the story
--FYI: Smart phones are allowed--don't fall into the trap, though!--, and dictionaries are available on the back shelf!

Transition
--Re-column the desks and pick up a "Final Countdown" document from the front table.

Closure -- The Final Countdown (last 5 mins.)
--In the time permitted, complete the document to the best of your ability so that I can get a snapshot of how we did today and where we should head next.

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment/Class Preparation)
--Complete 45 minutes of Membean training in three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 11/1 (see the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet).
HW (Class Preparation)
--Bring in a piece of writing for the style/voice activity next class block; otherwise, you will be working with "The Masque..."
--Close read/annotate your assigned section of “The Masque…” (SEE DIRECTIONS IN BLOG POST TITLED "DIRECTIONS FOR CLOSE READING/ANNOTATING OF 'THE MASQUE...'") and otherwise continue working with the short story with understandings/ideas from today in mind.  Be prepared for an assessment and/or a discussion about the reading on Wednesday, 10/31.
--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  You have up until early December to finish your book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
Writing
--Continue outlining and/or drafting your short story.  The final draft of the assignment is due on Tuesday, 11/13, which is about 2.5 weeks from today!  My classroom is open after school for any individuals looking to "workshop" together.
