English 10 Honors--10/15/2018

Jump Off (3-5 mins.)
--At the start of the block again today, students will be picked at random to share both their current claims related to the essential questions as well as their pictures for the "It's in my nature..." wall.  Please spend a few minutes preparing to share in the event that you are selected to do so today!  If you already shared, please engage in free reading until you are instructed to stop.

S. the C. (5-8 mins.)
--Reminder: The essential questions explored throughout the entirety of the course:

Why do people say what they say, do what they do, etc.?  What are human beings really like?  What is your "why?", and how is it related to your observations about/understanding of human nature?

Activity/Discussion (cont.) -- Exploring the Essential Questions (10-15 mins.)
--finish preparing to share quietly and independently
--five pictures shared via a random drawing:
  • What is your current claim related to the essential questions (and why if you are ready to "go there" already!)?  Why did you select the picture that you did?
Transition (1-2 mins.)
--Please pick up a copy of the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale" from the front table.
--Please take out both your "Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts" document and your notebook.  Date a page in your notebook (10/15).

--jot down notes shared via PowerPoint/Q & A
Discussion Preparation -- The Short Story/Poetry "Unit" and "The Masque of the Red Death" Pre-reading (10-15 mins.)
--During the next part of today's class block, we will finish "gearing up" for Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" by discussing the pictures that you are about to analyze.  Today, I will be assessing contributions via the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale"--let's take a quick look at the halfsheet!  Considering the "why?" question today before responding is highly advised!
--Transition
  • Pick up a copy of the document with pictures and lines on it from the front table.
--Directions
  • Take a thoughtful look at each of the pictures.  With Edgar Allan Poe's work, one can expect allegory and symbolism.  What does each picture suggest to you/what might each "thing" pictured represent within the story?  Write your ideas on the lines provided.  (For example, next to the picture labeled "Prospero [the host of the masquerade]", I might write the following: wealth).  In order to be more fully prepared for discussion, jotting down responses to the "why?" question would also be beneficial, as in the following example: Prospero looks and sounds like "prosperous", which basically means wealthy and successful.
Transition (2-3 mins.)
--form an alphabetical-by-middle-name circle out of the desks--you, of course, can talk when forming this circle!

"Unit" Introduction/Looking Ahead/Discussion -- The Short Story/Poetry "Unit" and "The Masque of the Red Death" Pre-reading (20-ish mins.)
--ice breaker/teambuilding: two Artifact Bags
--discussion protocol shared--THIS DISCUSSION WILL OCCUR ON WEDNESDAY, 10/17!!!
--engage in discussion/notetaking about the reading titled "Reading the Story":
  • distinguish between commercial and literary fiction
  • begin to answer these questions: What is a short story? and How does purposefully reading a short story enhance our understanding of the human experience?
  • analyze works that we've read in the past--commercial or literary fiction?
--continue engaging in discussion by "dumping" potential meanings for each of the pictures on the front board
  • I WILL ASSESS CONTRIBUTIONS VIA THE "DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTION RATING SCALE".
Before You Leave (last few minutes)
