English 9--9/16/2016 & 9/19/2016

Jump Off (10-15 mins.)
--If you have a free reading book picked out already, write your first and last name on a Post-it.  Stick the Post-it to your book, and place the book on the front table.
--Pick up a copy of the "Diagnostic Test" for our vocabulary program from the front table.  Complete the assessment quietly and independently back at your assigned seat.  This is a pre-test meant to diagnose your current knowledge and understanding.  Thank you for your cooperation!
--When you finish, ...
  • set up your binder tabs via the list on the front board (This list also exists as a blog post.)
  • pick up a Level D vocabulary book and a marker from the front table.  Write your name on the inside cover and on the bottom of the pages of your vocabulary book.  Then, return the marker.
S. the C. (5-8 mins.)
--agenda/HW

"Setting the Table"/Instruction -- Vocabulary Unit #1 (10-12 mins.)
--share the correct responses to the Diagnostic Test--students mark correct responses and count up total number correct
--analyze Diagnostic Test class data via "heads down/hands up"
--vocabulary work: rationale and our typical routine
--go over Unit #1 word list (page 14)--read word aloud and have students repeat the word--repeat this process for the entire list (When time permits, we will also sometimes look at the part[s] of speech, definition, and sample sentence[s] for a word.)

"Work smarter" suggestion:

  • Put a star next to words that are "foreign" to you (those that will definitely need to be studied).
--Begin preparing for the Unit #1 vocabulary quiz, which will take place at the beginning of class on Thursday, 9/22 (ACE) or Friday, 9/23 (BDF).

Transition (2 mins.)
--If you have not already submitted an index card to me about Article of the Week, pick up an index card from the front table.

Differentiated Flex Block -- Article of the Week, Vocabulary, and/or Free Reading (until 20 mins. remaining in class)

--Blocks 2, 3, and 4: Q & A about the Article of the Week directions
  • Another key reason why we do Article of the Week: purposeful and active reading practice!
--directions given for how to spend this block of time
--establish parameters for work environment
--independent work time as per the list below:
  • Article of the Week
    • Engage in active/purposeful independent reading of Article of the Week #1 as per directions and in order to answer the following closure question:
      • What is the author's/authors' main claim?  In other words, what is/are the author(s) of the text ultimately trying to argue?
    • Write your name at the top of the lined side of your index card.  Then, answer the italicized question above in one-two complete sentences.  Good luck!
    • As soon as you have completed your best work, submit it to me at the front table.
  • Vocabulary
    • Mindfully complete the assigned exercise (and some of the others if you feel inspired!) and begin preparing study materials (e.g., flashcards, split page notes, etc.)
  • Free Reading
    • If you do not already have a free reading book, quietly browse the classroom library and select something.  (I'll be glad to do my best to help!)
    • Engage in free reading of either your free reading book or Upfront newsmagazine (if you do not have your book with your today).
Transition (3 mins.)
--Without talking, form an alphabetical-by-last-name circle out of the desks.  This should take no more than two minutes!

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (remainder of class)
--I hand a paper bag to random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...

HW (Class Preparation/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete the Choosing the Right Word ("50/50") vocabulary exercise (pages 17 and 18). Expect me to check your work next class (Tuesday, 9/20 [ACE] or Wednesday, 9/21 [BDF]). The Unit #1 quiz will take place on Thursday, 9/22 (ACE) or Friday, 9/23 (BDF).
HW (Class Preparation)
--If you still have not done so already, select a free reading book.  Read your free reading book for at least 10 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
