Jump Off (15-20 mins.)
--Pick up the "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts 2016-2017--Assessment--Terms/Concepts #1-40" document from the front table.  Complete the quiz quietly and independently back at your assigned seat.  Good luck!  When you finish taking the quiz, ... 

  • place your work on the floor next to your desk
  • pick up a copy of the "Free Reading Course Component--Overview Document" from the front table
  • grab a laptop from the cart up front and get yourself logged in to Windows
  • mindfully read the "Free Reading Course Component--Overview Document."

Vocabulary Instruction -- Membean (25-30 mins.)

    • Write down clarifying questions

--log in to Membean and train for 15 minutes

--When you finish, log out and return your laptop.  Then, attend to the bullets below:  
  • If you do not yet have a free reading book, spend some time browsing the classroom library and see if anything piques your interest.  I'll be glad to give you recommendations if you would like!
  • Open your notebook to a clean page.  Put today's date (9/19/2016) in the lefthand margin and label the page "Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews."  Then, based on memory from past English courses and/or the assistance of your "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts--2015-2016 School Year" document, define the literary concept "theme statement" in your own words.  Be prepared to share and discuss your definition.

  • Get in pairs formed on Day 1 of class.
--in partnerships, continue conducting interviews/taking notes/developing theme statements:
  • REMINDER: YOU MUST INCLUDE A DIRECT QUOTATION FROM YOUR PARTNER IN YOUR ESSAY!

--Without talking, form an alphabetical-by-last-name circle out of the desks.  This should take no more than three minutes!

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (time permitting)
--I hand a paper bag to a random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing

--Prepare for the following ASSESSMENTS:
    • mastery of terms/concepts 41-60 ("Literary fiction"-"Quest") next class (Wednesday, 9/21)
      • FYI: TERMS/CONCEPTS FROM THE FIRST FORTY ON THE LIST ARE "FAIR GAME," SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU REVIEW THE FIRST SIXTY.
    • Vocabulary Quiz #1 on Friday, 9/23
    Writing
    --The Thematic Essay Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay (your best effort) is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, 9/27 (just over one week from today) typed in proper MLA format.  If you still need to gather additional information about your partner, do so!
    Miscellaneous
    --We will have computer access again both next class and Friday.  After that, you are on your own for completing the writing assignment.  Plan accordingly!

    --If you have not done so already, select a free reading book.  Read your free reading book for at least 15 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
    --Make sure to SEE ME if you have any questions about anything from the class so far.  (For example, if you are unsure about the accuracy and complexity of one of your term/concept definitions, drop by and run it by me!)
