English 9--5/14/2013

Jump Off
--Pick up a copy of the "Dragonsong Unit Final Essay Grading Sheet" from the front table.  Quietly and independently read the rubric with these questions in mind: What, specifically, will it take to achieve mastery (80%+) on this writing assignment? AND What about the rubric confuses me/is unclear?

Writing Workshop -- Dragonsong Unit Final Essay

--Mr. Martin models parenthetical referencing of direct quotations from prose and poetry
DURING THE NEXT BLOCK OF TIME, YOU SHOULD TWEAK YOUR ESSAY BASED ON NEED:
1.)  discuss method of hooking and overall effectiveness of first sample introduction--make any necessary improvements together
--repeat #1 for another of the remaining introductions--consider thesis statement as well
DURING THE NEXT BLOCK OF TIME, MEETINGS WITH MR. MARTIN WILL OCCUR AS PER THE ORDER WRITTEN ON THE FRONT BOARD (BRING YOUR COMPUTER!):
--continue typing your essay, aligning your work with the rubric/striving for mastery--body paragraphs that match up with your thesis statement (topic sentence[s], detail[s]/tieback[s], concluding sentence[s]) and a conclusion (which likely addresses the "so what?")--make sure to attend to language use and conventions as you type--can you be totally finished with your essay by the end of the block?

--Your final essay is due at the beginning of class next time (Thursday, May 16th).  Make sure to align your work with the rubric--strive for mastery, as you are all quite capable! :)
