English 10 Honors--11/10/2016

Jump Off (15-20 mins.)
--Pick up the "The Grammar Hammer--Assessment: Parts of Speech, Comma Usage with Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS), and Comma Usage with Subordinating Conjunctions (WUBAIS)" document from the front table.  Complete the quiz quietly and independently.  Good luck!
--When you finish, take out both your "Feedback Analysis: Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews" document and your scored and commented-upon essay.  Continue processing the feedback provided to you and handwriting initial revisions on your essay itself.
  • During this time, students with specific questions can meet with me for no more than four minutes at a time as per the order established on the front board.

Looking Ahead -- Animal Farm Pre-reading Stations Activity (8-10 mins.)

Transition (3-5 mins.)
--Pick up the following items from the front table:

  • a copy of George Orwell's Animal Farm--write your first and last name and book number on the sheet on the front table, and write your first and last name and "Mr. Martin" on the inside cover of the novella
  • approximately 8-10 Post-its
--Take a look through your copy of Animal Farm--get a feel for it, if you will.

HW Time (remainder of class [time permitting])
--take a look at the Post-it directions included within your copies of the novella--Q & A
--reading (oral? independent?)/modeling of the Post-it Note strategy?/discussion of first few pages?

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete a total of 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before 11:59 PM today.  If you fail to appropriately train between now and the administration of Vocabulary Quiz #3, you will not be permitted to take the quiz until you catch up (see the "Membean Routine" document).
--Complete another 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 11/17.  If you fail to appropriately train between now and the administration of Vocabulary Quiz #3, you will not be permitted to take the quiz until you catch up (see the "Membean Routine" document).
Writing
--The due date for submitting a revised Thematic Writing Assignment—Partner Interviews essay for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio is Thursday, 12/8 (just under one month from today)YOU MUST schedule a meeting with me to go over your revisions; simply handing in the revisions is unacceptable as per the protocol.  When time permits, meetings can/will occur during class time.

  • As you work on improving your essay, RE-READ based on your understanding of the grammar items that we have attended to recently and see if you can make any improvements in the Control of Conventions category!

HW (Class Preparation/Take-Home Assessment)
--Read Chapter 1-Chapter 3 of Animal Farm (up to the end of page 25).  Demonstrate your best skill level in reading actively/purposefully via the Post-it Note strategy, and expect any or all of the following to occur next time that we meet: 
  • collection of your Post-its for assessment purposes
  • a "60/40" reading assessment
  • a discussion geared around your Post-its 

 HW (Class Preparation)
--Read your free reading book for at least 15 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS.  You have up until the first week of December to finish your book.
