English 9--3/13/2013

Jump Off
--Pick up an index card from the front table. Number 1-20.
--Open your vocabulary book to page 98. Spend the first five minutes of class quietly and independently looking over the words--we will spend the first portion of today's class reviewing.

Review -- Vocabulary Unit #9
--PowerPoint slides shared--use word list on front board/write answers on card--check knowledge/understanding as we go, making note of which words to study more closely
--For HW, finish preparing for the Unit #9 assessment, which will take place next class (Monday of next week).

Self-Reflection -- “Complex sentences/subordinating conjunctions”/“Dragonsong Unit—Foreword and Chapter 2 Reading Comprehension Check”
--engage in quiet/independent self-reflection: How did you do? What did you do to prepare? What should you do to prepare?
--share out
**If you received a score lower than 70% on the “Complex sentences/subordinating conjunctions” assessment last class, you must take a re-quiz during homeroom or after school before the end of next week--make arrangements with Mr. Martin ASAP--additional preparation materials are located on the shelf next to the door above the “Grammar Hammer Extras” sign**

Transition -- share the discussion protocol (one contribution minimum/three contributions maximum--no third contribution until all have contributed once :))/"Discussion Contribution Rating Scale", assessments turned back in/form a circle

Discussion -- Dragonsong Chapter 1 and Chapter 2
--review the notes written on the front board from last class
--engage in discussion as per the protocol, making sure to hit as many of the questions as we can--IN BLOCK 4, THOSE WHO DID NOT PARTICIPATE LAST TIME KICK OFF THE DISCUSSION
--Mr. Martin continues taking notes on the front board under the appropriate topic headings
--your Chapter 1 packet is for your notes--don't settle for anything less than your best response for each of the questions/prompts

--Transition--pick up HW sheet
--HW rationale--project Chapter 1 "alternative sheet" on the front board
--For HW, read Chapter 3 and complete the "Chapter 3--Notetaking/Discussion Preparation" sheet.

Closure -- Final Countdown (time permitting)
