--thesis statement review
  • Here is a sample thesis statement from an effective past essay.  The theme statement is indicated in green, and the body paragraph subtopics are indicated in red.):
In C.'s eyes, success means "achieving my goals and being happy doing it."  The idea that if one wishes for his or her version of happiness and success in the future, one should work hard and plan ahead in the present is revealed in C.'s life.  This theme is apparent when C. is in school, on the ski slopes, with her family, by herself, and playing her saxophone.

PARAGRAPH CLAIM (TOPIC SENTENCE): When outside the Capulet orchard following the party, Mercutio demonstrates to readers that he is not the best of friends to Romeo whereas during this same scene, Benvolio reveals qualities of a good friend that Romeo would benefit from demonstrating.  INTRODUCTION/FIRST PIECE OF EVIDENCE: While Romeo is hiding in a tree in the Capulet orchard, Mercutio, in an attempt to draw Romeo out, makes comments about Romeo’s ex-girlfriend, Rosaline, that are actually quite rude.  Mercutio says, “I conjure thee by Rosaline’s…quivering thigh / And the demesnes that there adjacent lie” (2.1.17-20).  REASONING (EXPLANATORY TIEBACK): Here, Mercutio is making mention of a private part of Rosaline’s body, deliberately doing so because he is aware that Romeo becomes offended by such banter.  Though good friends often joke around with each other—and Mercutio and Romeo certainly have this type of relationship—sometimes, people take the comments too far.  Mercutio is not being a great friend here in this scene, especially since he continues making offensive comments.  INTRODUCTION/SECOND PIECE OF EVIDENCE: A few lines later, Mercutio continues with the following: “…

--Suggested "game plan":
  • take out your notes, outline(s), etc. and open up a Google Doc
  • correctly format your document using the sheet linked in above
  • continue meeting with your partner/group as necessary
  • quick-write a hook (10-ish mins.)
    • Do we need to review hook methods?
    • Do we need to review how quick-writes work?
  • finalize your theme statement (and, by extension, your thesis statement)
  • write a bridge that smoothly connects your hook to your thesis statement
  • outline/write a body paragraph
  • at some point, complete the 15-minute Membean training session promised you last class block (if you so desire!)
  • meet with me when I call your name
  • keep plugging away!
HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment/Class Preparation)
--Complete Membean training until you have earned 100 correct responses (approximately 45 minutes) over three different days before 11:59 PM TOMORROW (Thursday, 10/10).  (See the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet.) 
--WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FROM MEMBEAN 10/11-10/17; HOWEVER, YOU CAN STILL TRAIN OVER THE COURSE OF THOSE 7 DAYS (AND ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DO SO TO RECOVER SOME CREDIT IF YOU HAVE FALLEN BEHIND)!
HW (Class Preparation)
--Please read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!

--The Thematic Essay Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay (your best effort) is due at the beginning of NEXT class (Tuesday, 10/15typed in proper MLA format and printed out for placement in the black basket.  Good luck!
