English 10 Honors--10/17/2019

Jump Off
--THINK: Please obtain your Chromebook from the cart in the back of the classroom.  After logging in, open a Google Doc and follow the directions below.

  • Consider the following question: Is it possible to separate out one's soft skills from one's academic-/job-specific skills?
Transition
--Please pick up a copy of the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document from the front table.

Self-Assessment -- 1st Marking Period Soft Skills
--oral reading of self-assessment "Directions"/exemplification via a few sample responses from last school year
  • What should we consider from the school year so far (e.g., free reading, Membean, etc.)?
    • create a list on front board
--complete the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document quietly and independently as directed
  • FYIOn the back of the Post-it stuck to your desk, you will find your current GPA (not including the writing piece).
--When you finish, place your self-assessment in the black basket on the front table.  Then, complete on or both of the following until further directions are given: 
  • engage in free reading 
  • complete a 15-minute Membean training session.
*DURING THIS TIME, I WILL CONTINUE CALLING STUDENTS UP TO THE FRONT TABLE FOR CONFERENCING.*

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (up to 25 mins.)
--I hand a paper bag to a random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS FOR UP TO THREE BAGS TOTAL

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment/Class Preparation)
--TODAY IS THE LAST DAY FOR CREDIT RECOVERY MEMBEAN TRAINING!
--Complete Membean training until you have earned 100 correct responses (approximately 45 minutes) over three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday (10/24).  (See the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet.)
Writing
--Continually improve your Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay.  Conferences will continue occurring through next week, and a score will be reported as part of your Marking Period 2 GPA.
--Continue outlining and/or drafting your short story.  The final draft of the assignment is due on Wednesday, 11/13, which is just under one month from today!  My classroom is open after school for any individuals looking to "workshop" together.
HW (Class Preparation)
--Strongly consider actively/purposefully rereading Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death."  Be prepared for an assessment and/or a discussion about the reading NEXT WEEK!
--Please read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!

--Enjoy the weekend--you only get so many of 'em! :)  Marking Period 2 of 6 begins next week when we return.
