English 10--10/9/2019 & 10/10/2019

Jump Off (15-18 mins.)
--On your desk, you should find an index card.  Please let me know if I inadvertently missed your desk.  Draw a line down the middle of the unlined side of your card.
--Please obtain your Chromebook from the cart in the back of the classroom.  Back at your desk, log in, log in to Membean, and set up and complete one 15-minute training session.
--When you finish, fully shut down your Chromebook, return it to the proper slot, and plug it in via a cord.
*DURING THIS TIME, I WILL CALL STUDENTS OVER TO MY DESK TO REVIEW MEMBEAN TRAINING DETAILS.*

--FYI: For the remainder of today's class block, we will work on demonstrating command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing.  THIS STANDARD WILL BE SELF-ASSESSED AND INFORMALLY ASSESSED IN CLASS TODAY AS PART OF THE GRAMMAR HAMMER MINI-LESSONS AND OFFICIALLY ASSESSED BOTH NEXT CLASS VIA THE QUIZ AND WITHIN YOUR THINKCERCA WRITTEN RESPONSE.

--Please come up front and drop the grammar hammer: Aidan B., Alexia A., and Wyatt R.
--Take a look at the definition of "verb" and the three sample sentences (from George Orwell's Animal Farm ;0 ) written on the righthand whiteboard underneath the clock.  Then, take a look at the two sample sentences (also from Animal Farm!) written on the greenboard at the south end of the classroom.  What is the verb in each sentence?  Write both verbs on the lefthand side of the unlined side of your index card.

Grammar Hammer Mini-Lesson #1 -- Identifying Subjects and Verbs (20-25 mins.)
--Comprehension Check #1: 
  • Reveal verbs for sample sentences via index cards
    • How did we do?
--take a look at the definition of "subject" (also written on the righthand whiteboard)--finding subjects MODELED via three sample sentences
--Comprehension Check #2:
  • Take a look at the two sample sentences written on the greenboard again.  What is the simple subject in each sentence?  Write both subjects on the righthand side of the unlined side of your index card.
  • Reveal verbs for sample sentences via index cards
    • How did we do?
--Transition
  • Please pick up a copy of the "Identifying Subjects and Verbs AND Commas with Introductory Elements/Transitions" document from the front table.  After reading the information at the top of the first page, complete the task at hand quietly and independently.  Good luck!
--Comprehension Check #3:
  • Go over subject/verb combos via the SMART Board
    • How are you, personally, doing?

--On the lined side of your index card, write the three sentences below.  Then, label the subject and verb of each of the sentences.
  • I go walking in my sleep.
  • You are another day older.
  • Wisdom often comes with age.
Grammar Hammer Mini-Lesson #2 -- Commas with Introductory Elements/Transitions (20-25 mins.)
--go over the "Transition" by labeling the S/V for each of the provided sentences
--read instructions for remainder of the "The Grammar Hammer" document, add commas to the sample sentences, model rule/tips with sample sentences above (which are also written on the lefthand whiteboard)
--complete PRACTICE
--go over PRACTICE via the SMART Board, reiterating rule/tips
--For HW, prepare for the "Commas with Introductory Elements/Transitions" assessment, which will take place next class block (Tuesday, 10/15 [ACE] or Wednesday, 10/16 [BDF]).


Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (remainder of class [time permitting])
--I hand a paper bag to a random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher(s)/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment/Class Preparation)
--Complete Membean training until you have earned 100 correct responses (approximately 45 minutes) over three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday (10/10).  Make sure to attend "Membean Monday" as per policy if you do not meet the requirements this week.  (See the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet.) 
--WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FROM MEMBEAN 10/11-10/17; HOWEVER, YOU CAN STILL TRAIN OVER THE COURSE OF THOSE 7 DAYS (AND ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DO SO TO RECOVER SOME CREDIT IF YOU HAVE FALLEN BEHIND)!
