Looking Ahead/Literacy Activity and Instruction -- Take a Stand/Article of the Week (30-35 mins.)
--Reminders:
  • What should you be doing with the text?
  • Marking up the title and author is worthwhile as both pieces of information are needed to complete the "They Say" template.
  • Underlining the title and using it to get a sense of the author's purpose is worthwhile.
--finish modeling/Q & A with paragraphs 2 and 3
--independent reading of Article of the Week #1 (5 mins. maximum)
--share out as per "moves" made during the independent reading block--as I/students mark up the text on the SmartBoard, do the same on your personal copy of the text
--Transition
  • Pick up a copy of the halfsheet titled "Article of the Week #1 (2017)--Closure" from the front table.  After purposefully reading the directions, complete the task at hand to the best of your ability.
--Closure
  • Complete the halfsheet as directed.
  • When you finish, ...
    • turn in your halfsheet at the front table.
    • turn in your Article of the Week #1 document as well; we will continue working with this document in the future.
    • engage in free reading of either your book or Upfront newsmagazine until everyone is finished.
Transition (2-3 mins.)
--Without talking, form an alphabetical-by-last-name circle out of the desks.  This should take no more than two minutes!
