English 10 Honors--9/18/2017 & 9/19/2017

Jump Off (18-20 mins.)
--If you have not yet picked up a school picture form, procure one from the front table.
--If you have a free reading book picked out already, write your first and last name on a Post-it.  Stick the Post-it to your book, and place the book on the front table.
--Set up your binder tabs using the list on the front board.  (This list also exists as a blog post.)
--Pick up the "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts--Assessment--Terms/Concepts #1-40" document from the front table.  Complete the quiz quietly and independently back at your assigned seat.  Good luck!
--When you finish taking the quiz, place it facedown on the floor underneath your desk.  Then, read your free reading book or a copy of Upfront newsmagazine until everyone is finished.

Teambuilder/Research/Writing Workshop -- Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews (flex time)
--information about the Cumulative Writing Portfolio shared (blog post)--THIS FIRST ASSIGNMENT WILL BE INCLUDED WITHIN THE PORTFOLIO
--an introduction from another sample essay from the past shared
--Transition--get in partnerships formed on Day 1 of class
--in partnerships, conduct interviews/take notes:
  • REMINDER: YOU MUST INCLUDE A DIRECT QUOTATION FROM YOUR PARTNER IN YOUR ESSAY!
Transition (2-3 mins.)

--Without talking, form an alphabetical-by-last-name circle out of the desks.  This should take no more than two minutes!

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (remainder of class)
--I hand a paper bag to a random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...

Before You Leave (time permitting)
--re-column the desks

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete a total of 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before Friday, 9/22.  If you fail to appropriately train, you will not be permitted to take Vocabulary Quiz #1 (see the "Membean Routine" document).

HW (Class Preparation)
--If you have not done so already, select a free reading book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!  Next class block, any students who have yet to select a book will be required to come to homeroom as per policy.
  • So long as you have a free reading book selected, why not read it a bit between now and next class block? ;)
--Prepare for the following ASSESSMENTS:
    • mastery of terms/concepts 41-60 ("Literary fiction"-"Quest") next class (Wednesday, 9/20 [ACE]/Thursday, 9/21 [BDF])
      • FYI: TERMS/CONCEPTS FROM THE FIRST FORTY ON THE LIST ARE "FAIR GAME", SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU REVIEW ALL SIXTY.
    • Vocabulary Quiz #1 on Friday, 9/22 [ACE]/Monday, 9/25 [BDF]
    Writing
    --The Thematic Essay Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay (your best effort) is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, 9/26 (ACE)/Wednesday, 9/27 (BDF) typed in proper MLA format.
    • At this point, you should have close to enough information and therefore ought to consider outlining.
    • We will have computer access on Friday/Monday.  Plan accordingly!

    --Please plan on attending our pizza party/ice cream social!
