English 10 Honors--9/20/2017 & 9/21/2017

Jump Off (15-20 mins.)
--If you did not do so last class, please write your first and last name on a Post-it.  Stick the Post-it to your free reading book, and place the book on the front table.
--Pick up the "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts--Assessment--Terms/Concepts #1-60" document from the front table.  Complete the quiz quietly and independently back at your assigned seat.  Good luck!
--AS YOU WORK, I WILL GIVE YOU A FORMAL INVITATION TO NEXT WEEK'S PIZZA PARTY/ICE CREAM SOCIAL.
--When you finish taking the quiz, place it facedown on the floor underneath your desk.  Then, read your free reading book or a copy of Upfront newsmagazine until everyone is finished.

Teambuilder/Research/Writing Workshop -- Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews (flex time)
--What is a theme statement?
--take a look at the "Theme Statements--The Do Nots and The Dos PowerPoint (English 9 review)
--Transition
  • Take out any notes that you have about your partner.
  • Get in pairs formed on Day 1 of class.
--in partnerships, continue conducting interviews/taking notes/developing theme statements:
  • REMINDER: YOU MUST INCLUDE A DIRECT QUOTATION FROM YOUR PARTNER IN YOUR ESSAY!
--DURING THIS TIME, ANY STUDENTS INTERESTED IN A REFRESHER ABOUT WRITING HOOKS CAN WORK WITH ME OFF TO THE SIDE.

Transition (2-3 mins.)
--Without talking, form an alphabetical-by-last-name circle out of the desks.  This should take no more than three minutes!

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (time permitting)
--I hand a paper bag to a random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...


HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete a total of 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before Friday, 9/22.  If you fail to appropriately train, you will not be permitted to take Vocabulary Quiz #1 (see the "Membean Routine" document).
HW (Class Preparation)
--Prepare for the following ASSESSMENTS:
  • Vocabulary Quiz #1 NEXT class (Friday, 9/22 [ACE]/Monday, 9/25 [BDF])
  • mastery of terms/concepts 61-80 ("Realism"-"Verbal irony") on Tuesday, 9/26 [ACE]/Wednesday, 9/27 [BDF])
    • FYI: TERMS/CONCEPTS FROM THE FIRST SIXTY ON THE LIST ARE "FAIR GAME," SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU REVIEW ALL OF THE TERMS/CONCEPTS.
Writing

--The Thematic Essay Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay (your best effort) is due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, 9/26 (ACE)/Wednesday, 9/27 (BDF) (just under one week from today) typed in proper MLA format.

  • At this point, you should...
    • be drafting a thoughtful theme statement as per the guidelines reviewed today and aiming to perfect its wording by the weekend.
    • have more than enough information and therefore ought to be outlining.
  • We will have computer access NEXT class (Friday/Monday).  Plan accordingly!

Miscellaneous
--Read your free reading book for at least 10 minutes between now and next class. ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS.
--Please plan on attending our pizza party/ice cream social after school on Monday, 9/25!
