English 9--3/18/2014

Jump Off
--Spend the first few minutes of class reading through your "The Facts of Pern" notes page.  Once Mr. Martin is finished taking attendance, a brief reading check quiz will take place.

--pronounce the Unit #7 vocabulary words together--make sure to prepare for the Unit #7 assessment, which will take place on Monday, 3/24/2014

Transition -- pick up the "'The Foreword'--Purposeful Reading Check" slip from the front table

Assessment -- "The Foreword"--Purposeful Reading  Check
--complete the assessment as directed
--when finished:
  • place assessment in the black basket on the front table
  • pick up the the quarterslip, a piece of tape, and approximately six Post-its from the front table
  • if you have not already done so, write your name and "Mr. Martin" on the inside cover of your copy of Dragonsong
  • stick the quarterslip to the inside cover of your copy of Dragonsong
  • begin conducting a gist reading of the first chapter of the novel until all students are finished with the assessment
Mini-Lesson -- The Post-it Note Strategy: Active Reading
--distinguish between close reading, purposeful reading, and active reading by eliciting definitions of each of the bolded terms from students--what have we done so far this year the fits each of the categories?
--model the Post-it Note Strategy for active reading for the first two pages of Dragonsong--each time that a section of Dragonsong is assigned to be read for homework, you will be using this strategy
--look at items on the slide titled "What to put on Post-its" and categorize Mr. Martin's notes accordingly
--oral active reading--as Mr. Martin continues reading Chapter 1 aloud, use the Post-it Note Strategy in order to "talk to" the text

Closure Discussion -- Dragonsong Chapter 1
--for the last 10-15 minutes of class, use Post-its to engage in discussion--contributions will be assessed via the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale"
--any confusion regarding "The Facts of Pern" should be cleared up here as well

HW
--Prepare for the Unit #7 vocabulary assessment, which will take place on Monday, 3/24/2014.
--Finish actively reading Chapter 1 of Dragonsong by way of the Post-it Note Strategy.  Expect to continue dealing with Chapter 1 of the novel next class.
--YOU MUST BRING YOUR DRAGONSONG BOOK TO CLASS EVERY DAY BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF THE DRAGONSONG UNIT. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR BOOK, EXPECT CONSEQUENCES FOR LACK OF PREPARATION.
