English 10--9/11/2019 & 9/12/2019

Jump Off (20-25 mins.)
--concept of the Jump Off explained yet again as a reminder
  • Today's Jump Off
    • Please turn in your signed slip from the "Important Information" document by placing it in the black basket on the front table.  You might want to keep your "Important Information" document out!
    • Please find your name card and sit in the corresponding desk.  (It is possible that seating arrangements have been adjusted a little bit.)  At your desk, you will find the following:
      • a copy of the "Day 1 Review - You betcha! vs. Nah, not so much" sheet
      • a copy of the "Commitments/Consequences" sheet
    • After purposefully reading the "DIRECTIONS" at the top of the "Day 1..." sheet, complete the task at hand quietly and independently--this is your "assessment."  Good luck!
      • When you finish with the assessment, turn the paper over and keep it on your desk.  Then, begin brainstorming via the "Commitments/Consequences" sheet.
*WHILE YOU WORK, I WILL CHECK HOMEWORK COMPLETION AND LIST INITIALS ON THE WHITEBOARD FOR HOMEROOM DETENTION.  I HOPE I DO NOT HAVE TO LIST ANY NAMES! :)

S. the C. (8-10 mins.)

--students share/compare in groups of two-three

  • take a break halfway through by playing the Shoe Game
Looking Ahead -- Establishing Our Classroom Environment: Commitments & Rule of the Room/Consequences (5-10 mins.)
--oral reading of directions/MODELING (if necessary)
  • share my commitments, which are posted in the front of the classroom
--Q & A (if necessary)
--quiet and independent work time (cont.)
  • The brainstorming you are doing today will be used in class in the near future in order to engage in further organization/discussion and make some important decisions.
Transition (1-2 mins.)
--Please place your sheet in the black basket on the front table.  Then, engage in free reading until the class block ends.

Before You Leave -- Free Reading (remainder of class)

HW (Class Preparation)
--Please aim to read at least 5 pages of your free reading book between now and next class, and bring your free reading book to class daily.  I intend to randomly check for books and include your level of preparation in my reporting via Schooltool.  If you still do not yet have something worth reading, see if you can find something on your own time before we meet again.  We will head to the library next week, and I will be checking your books in the near future!
--Please complete the "Artifact Bag" assignment as directed to turn in at the beginning of NEXT class (Friday, 9/13 [ACE] or Monday, 9/16 [BDF]).  I am looking forward to taking "breaks in the action" the next few weeks in order to use these bags for teambuilding!
Miscellaneous
--If you did not turn in the assignment due today, please make sure to attend to the policies that we reviewed today in class.  In other words, you are expected to come to Room 203 during homeroom today (Block 1 ACE) or the following day (all other classes).
--Make sure to SEE ME if you have any questions about anything from today's class!
--Remember that my classroom is available until 3:05-ish each day if you would like to stay after and work on homework!

--Block 2 BDF and Block 4 BDF: Enjoy the weekend--you only get so many of 'em! :)

On the backburner:
  • "Free Reading Course Component--Overview Document"

  • Hand out the letter and "Important Information" document
