Mini-Lesson (Phase 3)/Writing Workshop #2 -- First-Draft Reading/Short Story Summary
--next set of steps for our current mini-lesson:
  • Get in groups with a representative from each section (SEE THE WHITEBOARD FOR GROUPINGS).
    • Send a group member up to pick up a copy of the directions halfsheet (if your group does not already have one).
  • "Anchored in" again to our "Compact for Group Work", ...
    • share your sentences in chronological order.  Then, skim back through the story itself in order to determine what information/points is/are essential enough to include in a summary of the entire story.
      • Should anything be included that was not mentioned when sharing out?
    • on the back of your "First-Draft" sheet, craft a summary of Stockton's short story together that hits our targets/aligns with the "Summary Notes" on the front of your "First-Draft" sheet.
      • All group members must write the summary.  I will ask for submission of a copy at random at the end of the activity.
  • Summary submitted/one comment provided
Mini-Lesson (Phase 4)/Writing Workshop #2 (cont.) -- Elevating Diction and Proofreading for FANBOYS Errors
--When your group finishes writing a successful summary and I have provided one comment,
  • discuss Membean words (e.g., those for which you created posters earlier) and deftly incorporate at least one word in your summary.  Don't overdo it, though!
  • RE-READ for FANBOYS errors as you did in class last time.  Fix any errors that you find.
