English 10 Honors--11/8/2018

Jump Off (Flex Time)
--Please pick up a copy of the "'The Masque of the Red Death' Assessment" from the front table.  Then, work toward completion during the first portion of today's class block.
*AS YOU WORK, I WILL RETURN YOUR INDEX CARD FROM THE END OF LAST CLASS BLOCK, WHICH MIGHT COME IN HANDY!*
--When you finish the last part of the assessment, come up to the front table and...
  • place your assessment in the black basket
  • take out something to work on until everyone is finished (e.g., your short story OR free reading OR Membean training on your smartphone or Chromebook OR...)

  • your "'The Masque of the Red Death' Assessment" completed to the best of your ability
  • progress made with regard to some of your assignments (e.g., your short story closer to completion, your free reading book closer to completion, etc.)
  • a better sense of what you might face when taking the NYS ELA Regents Examination in June of 2019
  • knowledge of a test-taking strategy that you might consider implementing when taking the Regents (and other multiple choice assessments such as the ACT)
  • some literature analysis practice under your belt as we head in to our next unit of the course, which is geared around William Golding's literary work Lord of the Flies

Instruction/Discussion -- The NYS ELA Regents Examination, Test-taking, and Literature Analysis
--share last year's incentive plan for the NYS ELA Regents Examination
  • Let's get a date on the calendar and get invitations out to current juniors!
--test-taking strategy modeled--"setting up" the passage for purposeful reading!
--brief discussion
  • share mark ups/notes in order to draw conclusions with regard to each of the prompts--continue marking up the text and jotting down notes underneath each prompt
--Transition
  • Pick up the corresponding multiple choice prompts from the front table.
--go through the prompt choices together with our conclusions in mind--do any obvious "matches" exist?
  • draw logical conclusions together for prompts where our earlier conclusions do not match, too

  • What did you take away from the experience in which we just engaged that you can apply to the "Reading Comprehension" section of the NYS ELA Regents Examination?
Closure -- Ball Toss
--Take a look again at the list of "You should leave class with..." items.  Then, in the form of no more than one specific sentence, show me and your peers that you are indeed "leaving with" something important from today's lesson.

  • How might you change, improve, add to, etc. your current answer to the Essential Question based on today's discussion of Linda Hogan's excerpt from "We Are Many"?

    --Complete 45 minutes of Membean training in three different days before 11:59 PM TONIGHT (see the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet).

    HW (Class Preparation)
    --Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  You have up until early December to finish your book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
    Writing
    --Continue drafting/finish drafting/work on revising your short story.  The final draft of the assignment is due on Tuesday, 11/13, which is FIVE DAYS from today!  My classroom remains open after school for any individuals looking to "workshop" together.

    --Enjoy the weekend--you only get so many of 'em! :)
