English 9--10/26/2017 & 10/27/2017

Jump Off (3-5 mins.)
--Block 2 ACE/Block 2 BDF: Please take out your index card from last class labeled "Moving Forward with AoW".  Then, in pairs, share your lists with each other.
--Block 3: Pick up an index card from the front table.  Label the index card as follows: "Moving Forward with AoW".  Then, think back to the last 10 minutes of class on Wednesday.  Finally, on your index card, write one "thing" you plan to do when completing Article of the Week #3 in order to move forward.

S. the C. (8-10 mins.)
--whole-group share-out via a drawing of cards (building a bridge between last class and today's class)
--Reminder: When we do Article of the Week, we are aiming to grow our nonfiction reading skills and related writing skills.  Today's work, then, pertains to the following targets:

When reading nonfiction, I can...
  • pick out the author's main point
  • pick out the important details that the author uses that connect back to his/her main point
  • write a summary that...
    • is no more than five sentences in length
    • does not include any unnecessary details
    • does not include any of my own opinion.
  • use context clues to figure out what unfamiliar words and phrases most likely mean
  • look up unfamiliar words to confirm their likely meaning or when context clues "fail" me.
    --agenda/HW

Old Business -- Article of the Week #2 (flex time [10-25 mins.])
--During this portion of the class block, continue jotting down notes on your index card.  Think of this card as a "to-do" list for when you complete AoW #3.
--Block 3 BDFone more quality active/purposeful reading of page 1 of AoW #2 shared
    --Block 2 BDF/Block 3 BDF: Transition
    • Pick up the "AoW #2 Reflection/AoW #3 Preparation" halfsheet from the front table.
    --Block 2 ACE
    • finish sharing out with regard to the halfsheet
    --Block 2 BDF
    • continue group analysis with second "claim" on halfsheet
    --Block 3 BDF
    • oral reading of halfsheet--in pairs ("anchor in"!), analyze "claims" together
    • whole-class share-out
--quality AoW #2 "They Say" template shared
--pair/share with regard to index cards
    • discuss in pairs first
      • I am drawing cards today so that I can hear as many voices as possible, so make sure that you're "ready to rock"!
*AS YOU SHARE IN PAIRS, I WILL RETURN YOUR AOW #2 WORK.*
      • cold-calling--students randomly selected to briefly share a "to-do" list item
--quietly and independently reflect upon your AoW #2 performance, capturing any questions that you have about moving forward
      --Q & A

Anticipatory Set -- Popularity (12-15 mins.)
--listen to/discuss Taylor Swift's "...Ready for It?"
      --listen to/discuss Typhoon's "Young Fathers"
--"heads down/hands up" and "fist to five"
      • Are you popular?
      • On a scale of 0-5 (0 = not at all; 5 = think about it often), how much does being popular matter  to you?
      Transition (2-3 mins.)
--Pick up the "English 9--Article of the Week #3 (10/23-10/27)" document from the front table and staple your index card to the document.  Before we do anything else with this article, we will engage in an oral "first-draft" ("gist") reading.  Feel free to jot down some notes on the text while we do so!

Looking Ahead -- Article of the Week #3 (15-20 mins.)
      --oral "first-draft" reading
      • brief discussion about initial observations, impressions, etc.
--purposeful reading of the directions in the box on the front page
      • Q & A
      • active/purposeful reading directions modeled for the first few paragraphs
--quietly and independently, work on the Article of the Week for at least 5 more minutes

HW Time/Free Reading (remainder of class)

      HW (Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete Article of the Week #3, which is due at the beginning of class on Friday, 11/3 (ACE) or Monday, 11/6 (BDF).  This task will include purposefully reading the directions in the box on the front page and completing your best work with regard to the directions.  (You might want to wait on making connections to "St. Lucy's..." until next week as we have not yet analyzed the story.)   Make sure to bear in mind your index card "to-do" list as you work.  When you finish, check your work to make sure that it best represents your English skills.  Keep in mind that I am available during "Office Hours" and more than happy to help students who take initiative! :)
      HW (Class Preparation)
--Bring your vocabulary book to class next time.  PLEASE DO NOT FORGET!
--Reminder: Next "Grammar Hammer" week, in addition to learning about a common error (both how to spot and fix the error), I will also formally check on your knowledge and understanding of the eight parts of speech.  It might be in your best interest to pick up a copy of the document inside the "Parts of Speech" folder in the "Grammar Hammer Extras" area of the classroom and continue reviewing (especially if you struggled on the comprehension check a few classes ago and have not already taken initiative to move forward!).
      Miscellaneous
--Read your free reading book for at least 10 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS.  You have up until early-December to finish your book.
--Enjoy the weekend--you only get so many of 'em! :)
