English 9--10/16/2017 & 10/17/2017

Jump Off (1-2 mins.)
--Please find your name card and sit in the corresponding desk.  This is your new assigned seat in Room 203! :)
--Block 2 ACE: If you were standing in the "ADVERB" area, "PREPOSITION" area, "CONJUNCTION" area, or "INTERJECTION" area of the classroom at the end of last class block, find your picture on the front table and regroup.
--Block 2 BDF: Several pictures from last class block are taped in a group to the front board.  Talk amongst yourselves in order to tape the pictures in the appropriate areas of the classroom (e.g., "NOUN" area, "PRONOUN" area, etc.).  I will wander around the room in order to monitor participation.  Good luck!
--Block 3 BDF:  Pick up a copy of the "The Eight Parts of Speech" chart from the front table.  While we work with this document today, ask yourself this questions: What part of speech is my laminated picture and/or word on my desk?  Feel free to flip your item over now!

--drop the hammer
--Block 2 ACE: whole group: conclude share-out (picking back up with "ADVERB") in order to finish populating chart
--Block 2 BDF: take a look at conclusions drawn during the "Jump Off" in order to finish populating chart
--Block 3 BDF:
  • whole group: read through pre-populated "The Eight Parts of Speech" chart together
  • directions given for next part of activity
    • using your collective knowledge and understanding, congregate in the appropriate areas of the classroom
  • whole group: share out in order to finish populating chart

--Transition/Closure
  • independent: (return to desks) and finish your copy of the chart
Transition (5-8 mins.)
--After putting away your "Parts of Speech Review" document in the "Grammar Hammer" section of your binder, pick up a highlighter and the "Parts of Speech--Ticket-Out-the-Door" document from the front table.  Complete the comprehension check quietly and independently.  Good luck!

  • Sample rubric squares shared for further clarification

  • Pick up a copy of the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document from the front table.
--oral reading of "Directions" and MODELING
  • What should we consider from the school year so far (e.g., free reading, vocabulary, etc.)?
    • add to list on front board accordingly
--complete the "Mr. Martin's English--Soft Skills Self-Assessment and Corresponding Comments" document quietly and independently as directed
--When you finish, place your self-assessment in the black basket on the front table and engage in free reading until class ends.

HW (Class Preparation)
--Next "Grammar Hammer" week, in addition to learning about a common error (both how to spot and fix the error), I will also formally check on your knowledge and understanding of the eight parts of speech.  It might be in your best interest to begin reviewing via the following website if you struggled on today's comprehension check:
