Jump Off
--If you have already contributed to the symposium but have not yet hung up your picture, please do so now.  The tape should be located on the desk by the classroom door.
--Please re-form the alphabetized-by-title-of-memoir circle out of the desks.  We will continue the symposium by picking back up with Gianna R.'s contribution (Garrard Conley's Boy Erased).

Please read aloud the reminder below under "S. the C.".  Then, share the rest of the agenda as well as the list of homework items at the bottom of the agenda.

S. the C.
--Reminder: It is important for you to stay caught up with regard to all of your coursework.  It is in your best interest to check the blog and Schooltool often.  Additionally, if you have an "INC" for a Marking Period, following up with Mr. Martin ASAP would be wise!
--agenda/HW

  • The New York Yankees stuffed animal ball that we have been using during the symposium is located in one of the orange bins on top of the big bookshelf.
  • Please keep a list for me of the five students who share today (beginning with Gianna R.).
Circle Discussion -- Human Nature in Memoirs Symposium
--Reminder: the symposium protocol:
  • I will begin the symposium by passing the ball to my left, and that person will first share his or her summary before passing the ball to the left.
  • If the next person wants to ask a follow-up question so as to gain clarity regarding the memoir, he or she will do so.  The ball will continue moving left in this manner until it arrives back at the person who started.
  • The person sharing will finish his or her contribution (quote, interpretation, personal anecdote, visual, connection to another visual on the wall, and extension of thinking).
  • The ball will get passed left again.  If the next person wants to comment upon, respond to, etc. the contribution that just occurred, he or she will do so.  Additionally, if a person has a planned contribution that is closely related to the current conversation, he or she might ask to share about his or her memoir to keep the conversation moving forward.
  • The ball will continue moving left in this manner until five students have discussed their memoirs.
The halfsheet referred to below is located in a stack on the front table somewhere near the black basket.  It should look familiar to the students as they worked with the same sheet at the end of last class block.

Transition
--re-column the desks and pick up the "Appreciating Others" halfsheet from the front table

Closure -- Appreciating Others
--complete the task at hand and place your completed halfsheet in the black basket on the front table

HW Time -- CHAPTER TWELVE of William Golding's Lord of the Flies (remainder of class)

    • complete Post-its (or notebook notes) as directed:
      • read actively as you have done in the past (e.g., If you need to jot down basic plot notes to get/remember the "gist", do so!; If you connect the text to personal experience, jot down notes about the connection and flag the page; If you have a question, jot it down and flag the page; etc.)
      • read purposefully with regard to...
        • literary techniques/elements
        • the conventions of literature
        • theme
        • the End-of-Course Assignment
        • SIGNIFICANT PASSAGES PERTAINING TO ANY OF THE ABOVE!

HW (Class Preparation)
--FYI: We will continue (finish?) the symposium next class block.

--Actively/purposefully FINISH reading Lord of the Flies by the beginning of class on Tuesday, May 21st as preparation for analysis/discussion/(an assessment?).
Writing
--You should be working on the End-of-Course Assignment.  A little over four weeks from now, you will submit an analytical argument in support of your claim with regard to the following questions:
  • End-of-Course Assignment:
    • Why do people say what they say, do what they do, etc.?  What are human beings really like?  What is your "why?", and how is it related to your observations about/understanding of human nature?
We will head to the library on May 21st and May 23rd.
