English 10 Honors--9/19/2018

Jump Off (1-2 mins.)
--Please pick up each of the following sheets from the front table:
  • the "Free Reading Course Component--Overview Document" (if you do not already have a copy)
  • the "Free Reading Course Component--Book Surfing" sheet
We will be dealing with each of these sheets during the first 1/4 of today's class block.

S. the C. (10-15 mins.)
--agenda/HW
--free reading overview (streamlined--highly encouraged to read sheet on own for a deeper understanding)
--"lay of the land" given (e.g., dystopian literature on univent), use of "Free Reading Course Component--Book Surfing" sheet modeled, directions given for what to do when finished with terms/concepts quiz

Transition (1-2 mins.)
--Pick up the "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts--Assessment--Terms/Concepts #1-40" document from the front table.

Assessment -- English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction (20-45 mins.) Terms/Concepts--Assessment--Terms/Concepts #1-40
--Complete the quiz quietly and independently back at your assigned seat.  Good luck!
  • When you finish taking the quiz, place it facedown on the floor underneath your desk.  Then, “book surf” and/or engage in free reading until everyone has finished the quiz.
--trade and grade
  • During this time, I highly encourage you to ask clarifying questions and add to your definitions on your terms/concepts packet!
--return quizzes to owners--reflect upon performance and note still-not-mastered terms/concepts on your packet--I will collect quizzes momentarily

Teambuilding Activity -- Artifact Bags (remainder of class)
--I hand a paper bag to random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...

HW (Class Preparation)
--Prepare for the following ASSESSMENT:
  • mastery of terms/concepts 41-61 ("Leitmotif"-"Protagonist") next class (Friday, 9/21)
    • FYI: TERMS/CONCEPTS FROM THE FIRST FORTY ON THE LIST ARE "FAIR GAME," SO MAKE SURE THAT YOU REVIEW ALL SIXTY-ONE.
--Continue/(finish?) getting in touch with your writing assignment partner and engaging in the "research" process.  The more intriguing information you have gathered about your partner by next class block, the better!
--If you have a book at home that you are reading or would like to begin reading for our free reading course component, bring the book to class next time (and daily between now and when you finish the book or the end of Marking Period 2, whichever comes first).  Otherwise, make time to sign a book out either from our classroom library or the high school library.  (FYI: The high school library should be open next week, and I will try to find us some class time to swing over there!)  I will be checking your books in the near future!
