English 10 Honors--4/11/2018 & 4/12/2018

Jump Off
--If you completed the "Spring Into Reading Challenge" as per the document you received prior to Spring Break and have not yet turned in anything, please place both the picture of your book cover and your brief recommendation form in the black basket on the front table.
--Take out your copy of the "Human Nature in Memoirs Symposium" sheet.  I would like to re-read the bottom half of the front of the sheet so as to "set the table" for today's symposium preparation block as well as the symposium itself.

S. the C.
--oral re-reading of the bottom half of the front of the "Human Nature in Memoirs Symposium" sheet
--model on whiteboard shared
  • Q & A
--agenda/HW

Discussion Preparation -- Human Nature in Memoirs Symposium
--work quietly and independently to summarize your memoir and extend your current thinking by connecting to another picture on the "It's in my nature wall..."
--in pairs, give your symposium contribution a "dry run" so that you are even more prepared to enter the circle

Transition
--form an alphabetized-by-title-of-memoir circle out of the desks

Circle Discussion -- Human Nature in Memoirs Symposium
--ice breaking?!?!
--today's symposium protocol:
  • I will begin the symposium by passing the ball to my left, and that person will first share his or her summary before passing the ball to the left.
  • If the next person wants to ask a follow-up question so as to gain clarity regarding the memoir, he or she will do so.  The ball will continue moving left in this manner until it arrives back at the person who started.
  • The person sharing will finish his or her contribution (quote, interpretation, story, visual, and extension of thinking).
  • The ball will get passed left again.  If the next person wants to comment upon, respond to, etc. the contribution that just occurred, he or she will do so.  Additionally, if a person has a planned contribution that is closely related to the current conversation, he or she might ask to share about his or her memoir to keep the conversation moving forward.
  • The ball will continue moving left in this manner until everyone has discussed his or her memoir.
  • FYI: Individual contributions will be assessed via the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale".  Also, I reserve the right to "jump in" whenever appropriate, yet I will try my darndest not to exercise this right!

Transition

--re-column the desks and pick up the "Appreciating Others" halfsheet from the front table

Closure -- Appreciating Others
--complete the task at hand and leave your completed halfsheet on your desk when the class block ends

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 4/19.  If you fail to appropriately train between now and the administration of Vocabulary Quiz #5 (likely the end of this week/the beginning of next week), you will not be permitted to take the quiz until you catch up (see the "Membean Routine" document).
HW (Class Preparation)
--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book (memoir still?!) between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!  These next two marking periods, I will randomly check for books and include your level of preparation in my reporting via Schooltool.
--You are STILL not yet expected to read any further in Lord of the Flies (though I have decided that we will not abandon our work with the text!)
