English 9--5/16/2017 & 5/17/2017

Jump Off
--Place the printout of the FINAL version of your End-of-Unit Essay in the black basket on the front table.  Please keep in mind that if you do not have your essay today, you must stay after school as per policy in order to continue wrapping up the writing process.
--Please pick up a copy of the "The Grammar Hammer--Comma Usage with Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS)" document from the front table.  Before you get started, please give me a few minutes of your time in order to...
  • assign new seats
  • model the directions for the quiz
  • model the directions for what to do after the quiz (colors and knife throwing scene)
  • answer any questions that you have in the event that either set of directions is unclear.
--When you finish with the quiz, place your work in the black basket on the front table and prepare for today's discussion.  (Wave me over if the directions are still unclear!)

S. the C.
--agenda/HW
--directions given for quiz and discussion preparation

Assessment -- The Grammar Hammer: Comma Usage with Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS) Quiz
--after directions, complete the quiz--good luck!

Transition
--turn in quiz when finished

Discussion Preparation -- Divergent up to Page 260
--prepare for today's discussion as per the directions below:
  • Pick something from pages 1-260 that you want to talk about today.
  • As soon as you have something, add it to the list on the front board.
  • Spend about ten minutes using your copy of Divergent to pursue both your item and one other item from the list:
    • What specific textual evidence can you find that relates?
    • What conclusions are you drawing?
    • Is there anything worth looking up on your smartphone (if you have one) that might deepen our understanding?
*AS STUDENTS ARE PREPARING, REVIEW THE "DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTION RATING SCALE"*
Transition
--Pick up a copy of the "Divergent Unit--Purposeful Reading Tasks" halfsheet from the front table.
--Take all of your materials and place them around the perimeter of the classroom so that we can make a circle out of the desks.
--Once the desks have been circled, we will populate the desks via a drawing of cards.

Discussion -- Divergent up to Page 260
--oral reading of halfsheet and modeling so as to clarify the expectations for reading Divergent moving forward
  • Q & A
--engage in discussion via a drawing of cards
  • If you would like to contribute to the discussion before your card is drawn (e.g., if you have something to add to a contribution that has just been made), simply raise your hand.  I will take your card out of the stack after you have contributed.
  • You may not make a second contribution to today's discussion until everyone has contributed once.
Transition
--With approximately ten minutes left, re-column the desks and pick up a copy of the "Divergent Unit--CHAPTER ELEVEN-CHAPTER TWENTY--Did You Read? Quiz" from the front table.  Back at your assigned seat, complete the quiz, placing your work in the black basket on the front table when you finish.

HW Time -- Veronica Roth's Divergent CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE - CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE: "Gist"/Purposeful Reading (time permitting)

HW (Class Preparation)
--Purposefully read up to the end of page 300 of Divergent by following the directions on the halfsheet titled "Divergent Unit--Purposeful Reading Tasks".  These reading tasks are aligned with the writing sections of the English 9 Final Examination!  You should also consider jotting down any notes that...
  • help you get the "gist"
  • relate to anything that came up in today's discussion.
--Following each section of reading of DivergentI still reserve the right to administer "Did You Read?" assessments similar to those that you have been taking.  If you have completed a successful reading of each section, said assessments should not be too terribly challenging! :)
--Aim to read at least 5-10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class if time permits you to do so.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
