English 9--10/12/2016 & 10/13/2016

Jump Off (3-5 mins.)
--Pick up a highlighter and the document entitled "Parts of Speech--Pretest" from the front table.  Complete the pretest quietly and independently.  Good luck!

--agenda/HW
--prepare slides for next activity--drop the hammer--share routine/rationale with students and link to vocabulary and the writing that we've done so far this year


Assessment (Block 2) -- "Mid-Mini-Unit Standards Assessment--RI.2RI.3, and RI.4 (flex time)
--Finish completing the task at hand and submit your best work.
--When you finish your assessment, place your work in the black basket on the front table.  Then, engage in free reading until everyone is finished.

Transition (2 mins.)
--return highlighter and pick up a tile, an Expo marker, and a scrap for erasing from the front bookshelf--be kind to my markers!

Review Activity/Instruction -- The Grammar Hammer--Parts of Speech TILES (20-25 mins.)
--directions given for activity
--indicate pretest responses as directed by the PowerPoint slides/take any necessary notes

Transition (8-10 mins.)
--Read the standards below--the bolded part of the first standard is the focal point of our next lesson--and consider and be ready to discuss the questions that follow:

  • RL.2:  English 9 students can determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
  • RI.2:  English 9 students can determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text
    • What does the RL.2 standard ask students to do?
    • What is the main difference between the RL.2 standard and the RI.2 standard that we have worked toward mastering already this school year?
    • On a scale of 1-5+, how would you rate your mastery of the bolded part of the RL.2 standard?
--pair/share--next class, which marks the beginning of the second half of our first unit, is an RL.2-driven lesson with an assessment of RL.2 skills as closure
--next class will also present an opportunity to apply standard SL.1 by aiming to participate effectively in a collaborative discussion

Teambuilding Activity (Block 3 and Block 4) -- Artifact Bags (flex time)
--I hand a paper bag to random student--he/she then displays items from the bag one at a time, briefly describing what he/she is seeing
--guess who?!
--owner of bag further describes, explains, shares anecdotes, etc. as a form of introduction to teacher/peers
--REPEAT THE PROCESS...

DEAR -- Free Reading Books (remainder of class [time permitting])
--students without books will read Upfront newsmagazine

HW (Class Preparation)

--Read your free reading book for at least 10 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS.  You have up until the first week of December to finish your book.
