English 10 Honors--4/18/2016

Jump Off
--Open your vocabulary book to page 100. Look through the list of words and put a mark next to all of the words that you are pretty confident about knowing already. Also, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the "Whimsical Words."
*AS YOU WORK, YOUR UNIT #7 EXERCISE CHECKS AND QUIZZES WILL BE RETURNED SO THAT YOU CAN ENGAGE IN SELF-REFLECTION.*

S. the C.
--Reminder: The due date for submitting a revised writing assignment for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio is Thursday, 4/28 (about 1.5 weeks from today).
--agenda/HW
--pronounce each of the Unit #8 vocabulary words (pages 100-103) and the "Whimsical Words"
--reflect upon your performance on the Unit #7 exercise check and vocabulary quiz and consider setting a rough goal for the Unit #8 quiz--remember that goals tend to be more powerful if you actually write them down!

Transition
--When you finish the last task described above, turn your Unit #7 quiz back in by placing it in the black basket on the front table and form a circle out of the desks.  Bring to the circle the following items:

  • your "AFTER" drawing (located on the front shelf by the conch shell)
  • your notebook
  • your purposefully/actively Post-ited copy of Lord of the Flies
  • your study guide
Discussion -- LotF CHAPTER ONE-CHAPTER FIVE
--bear in mind the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale"
--engage in high-level discussion:

  • question(s) from "BEFORE and AFTER" drawings that you looked at last class
  • your "AFTER" drawing
  • your "Marked for Greatness" response from two classes ago
  • purposeful reading Post-its as per the "What to Look for in Lord of the Flies" list
  • active reading Post-its (e.g., questions, connections to personal experiences, favorite lines or sections, etc.)
  • study guide
Transition
--Re-column the desks and return to your assigned seats.

HW Time/Free Reading

HW (Class Preparation)
--Begin preparing for the Unit #8 vocabulary quiz, which will take place at the beginning of class on Friday, 4/22, bearing in mind the rough goal that you (maybe?) set during today's class.  Make sure to familiarize yourself with the “Whimsical Words.” It might be a good idea to read "Anita Stockton Talks about Risk and Reward on the Stock Market" on pages 98 and 99 as a starting point as we've done with past units.
--Bring your vocabulary book again next class just in case we need it for review--PLEASE DO NOT FORGET!
--Purposefully/actively read CHAPTER SIX AND CHAPTER SEVEN of Lord of the Flies as preparation for analysis/discussion next class.
--Try to find some time to read your free reading book between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
Writing
--The due date for submitting a revised Intertextuality Unit--Culminating Essay Assignment for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio is Thursday, 4/28 (about 1.5 weeks from today)--YOU MUST schedule a meeting with me to go over your revisions; simply handing in the revisions is unacceptable as per the protocol.  When time permits, meetings can/will occur during class time.
