English 9--5/11/2016

Jump Off
--Pick up an index card from the front table.  Number the index card 1-20 as per the model on the front board.
--Open your vocabulary book to page 110. Spend the first five minutes of class quietly and independently looking over the words, as we will spend the first portion of today's class reviewing.
*DURING THIS TIME, ...
  • WE WILL CHANGE SEATS
  • I WILL RETURN YOUR UNIT #8 EXERCISE CHECKS AND QUIZZES SO THAT YOU CAN ENGAGE IN SELF-REFLECTION. DO NOT CLIP YOUR QUIZ INTO YOUR BINDER, AS QUIZZES WILL BE RE-SUBMITTED LATER IN THE CLASS BLOCK.*
S. the C.
--Reminder: It is important for you to stay caught up with regard to all of your coursework.  It would behoove you to check the blog and SchoolTool often.  Additionally, if you have an "NG" for a Marking Period, following up with me ASAP is in your best interest.

Review -- Vocabulary Unit #9
--PowerPoint slides shared--use word list on front board/write answers on card--check knowledge/understanding as we go, making note of which words to study more closely
--For HW, finish preparing for the Unit #9 vocabulary quiz, which will take place at the beginning of next class.

Transition
--discussion preparation topics shared
--column-by-column, come up to the front table:
  • re-submit your vocabulary quiz
  • pick up a discussion preparation halfsheet with which to work
Discussion Preparation -- Veronica Roth's Divergent Chapter 1-Chapter 10
--as additional preparation for today's discussion, respond to your discussion preparation question(s)/prompt(s), bearing in mind that "good" responses always refer specifically to evidence from the text.

Transition
--Pick up three strips of paper from the front table.
--Spell your last name backwards and think about how to pronounce it.  (Mine would be Nitram...it pretty much sounds the way it looks!)  Then, form an alphabetical circle using your "last names".

Discussion -- Veronica Roth's Divergent Chapter 1-Chapter 10
--"fodder" for today's discussion:
  • "Factions Organizers" pages
  • "Notice & Note" Post-its/notes
  • general Post-its/notes
  • question(s)/prompt(s) considered during "Discussion Preparation"  block
--some notes about today's discussion:
  • I need a volunteer to capture and organize notes on the front board as our discussion occurs (much like I did for us the two days we discussed "The Lottery")--any takers?!
  • In order to contribute to the discussion, you must raise your hand with one of your wadded up strips of paper.  I will do my best to select contributors based on the order of hands raised, but I would like for us to "exhaust a thread" of the conversation before moving on to something new.
  • After making a contribution, throw your strip of paper at the recycling bin in the middle of the circle.  If you make a shot, 1 bonus point is added to the class participation score that you earn for your contributions!
  • Contributions, as in the past, will be assessed via the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale".  Does anyone need to see the scale as a reminder of the expectations?
  • No one can make a third and final contribution until everyone has made one contribution.
Transition -- re-column the desks

HW Time (time permitting)

HW (Class Preparation)
--Finish preparing for the Unit #9 vocabulary quiz, which will take place at the beginning of class next time (Friday, 5/13).  REMEMBER THAT WORDS FROM PREVIOUS UNITS ARE "FAIR GAME" ON ANY VOCABULARY QUIZ THEREAFTER.
--Purposefully/actively read up to the end of Chapter 12 of Divergent.  This includes taking detailed notes on the page related to your faction/group as well as completing three or more "Notice & Note" Post-its and any additional Post-its related to anything worth discussing.  Review your purposeful/active reading notes, as an assessment is "fair game" at any point in time between now and when we finish the novel.
--Try to find some time to read your free reading book between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
Miscellaneous
--Expect to receive your commented upon and scored writing pieces next class!
