English 10 Honors--5/7/2018 & 5/8/2018

Jump Off
--Please remove any notes from your copy of Lord of the Flies.  Then, place your book on the front table.
--Open your notebook and date the page (5/7/2018 [ACE] or 5/8/2018 [BDF]).  Label this section of your notes "Introduction to Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist".
--Miss Farmer, the teacher in the film clip that we are about to view, seems to have planned her lesson in response to the following question that we have been exploring together:  Why do people say what they say, do what they do, etc.?  As you view the clip, pay attention to any thoughts that you have.  The following prompts/questions should help:
  • Summarize the life philosophy/depiction of human nature that Miss Farmer seems to be trying to convey.  To what extent do you agree or disagree with her "life line"?
  • What seems to be Miss Farmer's "why"?
  • What seems to be Cherita's "why"?
  • What seems to be Donnie's "why"?
  • What specific "things" would you add to Donnie's list ("the whole spectrum of human emotion") in order to present a clearer life philosophy/depiction of human nature?
  • What is your "why"?
--Please SEE ME during today's work block:
  • Leah E.
  • Bea T.
S. the C.
--discuss the film clip in pairs
--discuss the film clip as a whole class via a drawing of cards
--agenda/HW

Transition
--Pick up the following from the front of the classroom:
  • a copy of Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist.  Write your name and book number on the sheet of paper near the books.
    • On the inside cover of your copy of The Alchemist, write the following:
      • your first and last name
      • Mr. Martin
      • 2017-2018
  • a copy of the "The Alchemist Novella Unit--Paulo Coelho's 'Four Obstacles' Philosophy" document.  Purposefully read the directions.
Purposeful Reading/Discussion -- Paulo Coelho's "Four Obstacles" Philosophy
--work time
--engage in a share-out/discussion by completing the notes template on the front board and connecting Coelho's ideas to the "Jump Off"
  • What is your "why"?
--begin reading the novella together?

Planning/Work Block/HW Time -- Memoir Project/Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist
--work time/reading time as per parameters established in the past

HW (Class Preparation/Take-Home Assessment)
--Read the PROLOGUE and PART ONE of The Alchemist (up to the end of page 47).  Demonstrate your best skill level in reading actively/purposefully via the Post-it Note strategy, and expect any or all of the following to occur during our next class block:

  • collection of your Post-its for assessment purposes
  • a "60/40" reading assessment
  • a discussion geared around your Post-its
HW (Project/Writing)
--Your Memoir Project creation must be submitted to the "Memoir Project--2018" Google Classroom no later than 11:59 PM on Thursday, 5/10.  If your writing component upon which I can use the "The Four Cs of Quality Academic Writing" framework for scoring and feedback purposes is not part of your creation itself, the writing piece must be submitted by the beginning of next class (Wednesday, 5/9 [ACE] or Thursday, 5/10 [BDF]).
--Continue thinking about (and, quite frankly, consider beginning working on) the End-of-Course Assignment--you do not want to wait too long to get started on this!
HW (Class Preparation)
--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book (memoir still?!) between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!  This final marking period, I will randomly check for books and include your level of preparation in my reporting via Schooltool.
