Senior English--9/27/2011 & 9/28/2011

Jump Off -- pick up the pretest from front table--complete quietly and independently

S. the C. -- agenda/HW, go over list of common errors from goals paragraphs, go over Jump Off

Transition -- packet up

Instruction -- The Eight Parts of Speech
--discuss "the grammar hammer"--rationale
--go over chart on first page of packet--connect back to pretest
--based on your pretest, complete two exercises (8 mins.)
--go over a few from each exercise based on need
--for HW, prepare for posttest (this might mean completing more exercises, looking for help on the internet, reviewing your pretest side-by-side with the chart from your packet, etc.)

Listening Activity/Discussion -- Paulo Coelho Background Information/Novel Discussion
--brainstorm "Coelho Qualities" based on what we've seen in The Alchemist
--discuss
--listen to passage about Coelho--take notes
--share out
--connect to essay assignment
--briefly discuss Post-Its from end of novel (if desired)--how will you prepare for the exam?

Transition -- pick up sample essay from the front table/take out assignment sheet and list from last class--maybe talk about organization of binder?

Mini-Lesson -- The Admission/Job Interview/Military Essay
--materials assessment--what do you have to help you succeed?
--read/clarify assignment--focus on rubric criteria
--read/critique essay together using rubric
--create parameters for work block
--work block (do whatever you need to do!)

Closure -- What is your plan of action from now through next class?

HW
--prepare for parts of speech post-test, which will take place next class
--begin preparing for The Alchemist novel exam, which will take place two classes from now
--computer time next class for the second half of the block--move through the writing process as per your reflections:
*bring flashdrive and all essay-related papers, notes, etc. to maximize your productivity
