English 10--2/28/2020 & 3/2/2020

Jump Off
--Please obtain your Chromebook from the cart in the back of the classroom and log in back at your assigned seat.  Then, log in to Membean where today's quiz will deploy.  Finally, complete the quiz quietly and independently.  Good luck!

Assessment/Hooked on Books -- Vocabulary Quiz #3
--continue completing the quiz
--When you finish, please set your Chromebook aside.  Then, engage in free reading until everyone is finished with the quiz.
  • LATER TODAY, SOME OF YOU WILL MEET WITH ME AND DISCUSS YOUR FREE READING EXPERIENCE.
Transition
--Please keep out your free reading book.
--Please take out the following:
  • your "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet from last class block
  • the source that you printed out and began actively/purposefully reading last class block
S. the C.
--agenda/HW
--active/purposeful reading of "Limiting Children's Screen Time Linked to Better Cognition, Study Says" MODELED via SMART Board
--share list titled "Sample Inquiry Questions from NYS ELA Regents Exams" as well as potential inquiry questions for my topic (see whiteboard)

Research -- Inquiry-Based Argumentative Research Paper (time permitting)
--"anchored in" to our "Compact for Work Time," ...
  • finish actively/purposefully reading the source that you began working with last class block as per the directions on the "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet.  Remember that ultimately, you are continuing to conduct research in order to develop a "focused knowledge" of your topic.  Think of it this way:
    • Could you come up to the podium and talk intelligently about your topic for fifteen minutes without repeating yourself?
  • actively/purposefully read a second source in the same manner.
    • If you do not have a second source printed out and would prefer to read on paper, please SEE ME for a pass to the library.
    • all the while, work on narrowing your topic by zeroing in on the "right" inquiry question--perhaps a "Should..." question?--with the knowledge that the paper you will eventually write will be argumentative.  As such, you should be jotting down new questions/potential argumentative claims as they occur to you.
*WHEN YOUR NAME IS CALLED, MEET WITH ME AND...
    • SHARE YOUR ACTIVE/PURPOSEFUL READING NOTES AND ANSWER MY FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
    • DISCUSS YOUR FREE READING EXPERIENCE.*
      • I WILL HAND OUT COPIES OF THE "BOOK REVIEW" TEMPLATE TO STUDENTS WITH WHOM I MEET TODAY.
    Before You Leave
--return and plug in your Chromebook

--Complete Membean training until you have earned 100 correct responses or trained for a total of 45 minutes over three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 3/5.
    Writing/Class Preparation
--Strongly consider finishing actively/purposefully reading a second source as per the directions on the "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet (if you did not do so in class today).
--Please continue thinking about the following questions:
    • Research Unit: What might you ARGUE with regard to your research topic?  Do you find yourself coming any closer to an answer to this question?
    • End-of-Course Assignment: What is your "why?"?
    Class Preparation
--Aim to read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class block.
You have up until Wednesday, 3/11 to finish your book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
