Instruction -- Missing Comma(s) with a Nonessential Element
English 10 Honors students...
- demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, and punctuation.
- apply knowledge of language to make effective choices for meaning or style.
- strengthen writing as needed by editing or trying a new approach.
- use punctuation (commas, parentheses, dashes) to set off nonrestrictive/parenthetical elements.
--Transition
- Please pick up a copy of the "The Grammar Hammer--Common Error: Missing comma(s) with a nonessential element" sheet from the front table. We will purposefully read through the top two-thirds of the first page together.
Flex Block Preparation
--MODELING of the application activity (editing counterargument paragraph) via the SMART Board
--"Poetry Assessment #1" information shared (see the southern whiteboard)/MODELING of sharing one's rationale for a correct response via #4
Flex Block -- Grammar Hammer Self-Reflection, Practice, and Application; Moving Forward from "Poetry Assessment #1"; Applying the Conventions of Literature to Animated Film; the GVEP Literary Contest; and Membean Training
To-Do List

- RETURN YOUR ASSESSMENT TO THE BLACK BASKET ON THE FRONT TABLE WHEN YOU FINISH.

- For which sentences do you have a consensus?
- For which do you not?
- For those sentences where you do not have a consensus, talk together and see if you can come to one.
- For HW, if you feel it is necessary, read through the packet of additional information pertaining to this error and complete PRACTICE #4 (located in a manila folder in the "Grammar Hammer Extras" area of the classroom). HW (Class Preparation)

--Continue reviewing the conventions of literature, bearing in mind that you are expected to apply your knowledge and understanding (on the examination that you will begin taking next week, to Lord of the Flies, to your free reading books, to anything, really!) moving forward.
--Beginning NEXT CLASS (Tuesday, 3/26), you will be taking an examination that mirrors the New York State Regents Examination in English Language Arts (Common Core). Please come prepared!
--If you have not yet selected your final free reading book of the school year, consider doing so ASAP (with the knowledge, though, that you must read a memoir, and we will head to the library soon)--ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
