English 10 Honors--4/11/2019

--I am going to ask you to complete a quick write today, and you can complete the writing piece either on a sheet of lined paper or in a Google Doc.  Please pick up your Chromebook if you prefer using it.

Writing Workshop (cont.) -- Writing a Text-Based Academic Argument ("Article of the Week"/ThinkCERCA #2): Self-Driving Cars Quick Write
--Reminder: Quick write directions
--take out a sheet of lined paper or your Chromebook, date the page (4/11/2019), label this page "Self-Driving Cars Quick Write", and mentally prepare to write nonstop for 8 minutes
  • The PromptIt is the year 2035.  You are on your way to work in a self-driving car.  Tell the story of your experience, aiming to transport your reader into the moment and appeal to the five senses.

--nonstop writing for 8 minutes
--share in groups of two-three (formed via a drawing of cards) and determine the "best" anecdote
--"March Madness" to determine "best" anecdote

Transition
--Please return and plug in your Chromebook (if you used it).
--Please pick up a copy of each of the following from the front table:
  • the "Methods of Refutation--Method of Refutation #2" sheet
    • I recommend putting this sheet with your "Method of Refutation #1" sheet.
  • the "WRITING COMPONENT PART 2--Method of Refutation #2" document

--engage in a "materials assessment" (familiarize ourselves with another method of refutation, our essay as it currently stands, etc.)

  • DURING THIS TIME, I WILL MEET WITH STUDENTS ALPHABETICALLY IN ORDER TO CONTINUE SCORING LITERARY ANALYSIS WRITTEN RESPONSES.

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete 45 minutes of Membean training in three different days before 11:59 PM TONIGHT (Thursday, 4/11) (see the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet).
--WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FROM MEMBEAN 4/12-4/18; HOWEVER, YOU CAN STILL TRAIN THESE NEXT 7 DAYS (AND ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DO SO IF YOU HAVE FALLEN BEHIND)!
--Complete another 45 minutes of Membean training in three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 4/25 (see the "English Department Membean Routine" sheet). 
HW (Class Preparation)
--Aim to read 20-30 pages of your memoir over Spring Break.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!  These final two marking periods, I will randomly check for books and include your level of preparation in my reporting via Schooltool.
--Actively/purposefully read CHAPTER THREE and CHAPTER FOUR of Lord of the Flies as preparation for analysis/discussion/(an assessment?) NEXT CLASS (Tuesday, 4/23) (see the slip of paper).
--You will finish taking the examination that you have been working on in class on Thursday, 4/25.  The last section involves reading four texts and writing a text-based essay in response to a question about the sources.  In other words, you will do what we have done together over the course of our last few class blocks together!

--Enjoy Spring Break--you truly only get so many of 'em! :)
