Jump Off
--If you completed the "Spring Into Reading Challenge" as per the document you received prior to Spring Break, please place both the picture of your book cover and your brief recommendation form in the black basket on the front table.
--Pick up an index card from the front table.  Then, copy down the sentence written on the whiteboard underneath the clock.  Finally, find and fix the grammar error that exists in the sentence.  Good luck, and welcome back! :)
*DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME, I WILL...
  • RETURN YOUR LAST GRAMMAR HAMMER ASSESSMENT SO THAT YOU CAN REFLECT UPON YOUR PERFORMANCE
  • RETURN YOUR "'ST. LUCY'S HOME FOR GIRLS RAISED BY WOLVES' MINI-UNIT END-OF-MINI-UNIT ASSESSMENT" WRITING PIECE SO THAT YOU CAN USE IT LATER IN THE CLASS BLOCK
  • GET A SENSE FOR OUR CURRENT COLLECTIVE LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF TODAY'S COMMON GRAMMAR ERROR BY PEEKING OVER YOUR SHOULDERS AT YOUR INDEX CARDS.*

End-of-Unit Assessment Writing Prompt:

Application Activity -- Editing for the 4th C (Control of Conventions)
--directions given for what to do with your paragraph writing assignment as well as a model shared via SMART Notebook
  • After quickly re-reading your paragraph, RE-READ the paragraph numerous times in order to fix each of the errors that you are able to locate related to the proper use of commas with introductory elements and proper use of the possessive apostrophe.  Reading aloud is a good idea, and an even better idea is to look specifically for...
    • common introductory elements
    • prepositional phrases
    • subjects and verbs as components of independent clauses
    • nouns ending in -s.
--quiet and independent work time

Transition
--Turn in your writing assignment at the front table.

Closure -- Three-Word Summary
--directions given for what to do on the back of your index card from earlier in the class block
  • Select three words that best describe the content presented today.  Record your three words on the back of your index card.  Be prepared to share your words and rationale with at least one other person in the classroom.
--share-out (time permitting)

HW Time/Free Reading (time permitting)

HW (Class Preparation)
--Begin preparing for a grammar hammer assessment about the possessive apostrophe, which will take place at the beginning of class on Friday, 4/13 (ACE)/Monday, 4/16 (BDF) after we have dealt with one more common error.  These are the directions that you will find on said assessment for the section about the possessive apostrophe:
  • For each of the following sentences, which are about a debate in high schools in the United States, choose the word that correctly fills in the blank in order to demonstrate your mastery of the possessive apostrophe.
Also, with each new Grammar Hammer assessment administered, I reserve the right to "check on" your understanding of anything grammar-related that we have already worked on this school year.  Please keep this in mind when preparing! :)
--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!  These next two marking periods, I will randomly check for books and include your level of preparation in my reporting via Schooltool.

On the backburner:
  • Grammar Hammer--third wave with writing pieces (FANBOYS)
  • Vocabulary (students create picture review)
  • Next AoW
