English 10--3/3/2020 & 3/4/2020

Jump Off
--Please obtain your Chromebook from the cart in the back of the classroom.  Back at your desk, log in, log in to Membean, and set up and complete a 15-minute training session.
--When you finish, please set your Chromebook aside.  Then, engage in free reading until further directions are given.  While reading, please informally do the following:
  • Search for authorial purpose (e.g., characterizing a character a certain way, using symbolism, etc.)
  • Come up with theme words (e.g., adversity, love, etc.)
  • Develop potential theme statements about theme words
  • Allow your free reading book to help you answer the "why?" question
    • Why does the protagonist in your book do what (s)he does, say what (s)he says, etc.?
*LATER TODAY, SOME OF YOU WILL MEET WITH ME AND DISCUSS YOUR FREE READING EXPERIENCE.*

Transition
--Please keep out your free reading book.
--Please take out the following:
  • your "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet with which we have been working
  • the sources that you printed out
S. the C.
--agenda/HW
--"Compact for Work Time" reviewed

Research -- Inquiry-Based Argumentative Research Paper
--"anchored in" to our "Compact for Work Time," ...
  • continue actively/purposefully reading your sources as per the directions on the "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet.  Remember that ultimately, you are continuing to conduct research in order to develop a "focused knowledge" of your topic.  Think of it this way:
    • Could you come up to the podium and talk intelligently about your topic for fifteen minutes without repeating yourself?
      • If you do not have all of your sources printed out and would prefer to read on paper, please SEE ME for a pass to the library.
    • all the while, work on narrowing your topic by zeroing in on the "right" inquiry question--perhaps a "Should..." question?--with the knowledge that the paper you will eventually write will be argumentative.  As such, you should be jotting down new questions/potential argumentative claims as they occur to you.
*WHEN YOUR NAME IS CALLED, MEET WITH ME AND...
    • SHARE YOUR ACTIVE/PURPOSEFUL READING NOTES AND ANSWER MY FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
    • DISCUSS YOUR FREE READING EXPERIENCE.*
      • I WILL HAND OUT COPIES OF THE "BOOK REVIEW" TEMPLATE TO STUDENTS WITH WHOM I MEET TODAY.
    Before You Leave
--return and plug in your Chromebook

    Practice/Take-Home Assessment/Class Preparation
--Complete Membean training until you have earned 100 correct responses or trained for a total of 45 minutes over three different days before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 3/5.
--WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FROM MEMBEAN 3/6-3/12, WHICH MEANS THAT THIS 7-DAY WINDOW IS A SECOND "EXTRA WEEK" for Marking Period 4.  (See the updated "English Department Membean Routine" sheet.)
    Writing/Class Preparation
--Strongly consider finishing actively/purposefully reading whatever you were dealing with at the end of today's class block as per the directions on the "Working With Your Sources" halfsheet.
--FYI: By the end of next class block, you must submit an annotation (written response) for one of your sources.  Feel free to pick up a page of directions from the front table if you want to start on this assignment sooner than next class block!
--Please continue thinking about the following questions:
    • Research Unit: What might you ARGUE with regard to your research topic?  Do you find yourself coming any closer to an answer to this question?
    • End-of-Course Assignment: What is your "why?"?
    Class Preparation
--Aim to read at least 10 pages of your free reading book between now and next class block.
You have up until Wednesday, 3/11 (the middle of NEXT WEEK!) to finish your book.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
