English 10 Honors--10/4/2017 & 10/5/2017

Jump Off (1-2 mins.)
--Please take out your notebook and date the page.  Today is 10/4 (ACE) or 10/5 (BDF).

S. the C. (10-12 mins.)
--agenda/HW
--note-taking (Short Story as a Literary Form, Allegory as a Literary Term, and Romanticism as a Literary Movement)
--During the next part of today's class block, we will begin "gearing up" for Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" by discussing the pictures that you are about to analyze.  Please keep in mind that I am assessing contributions via the "Discussion Contribution Rating Scale".  Considering the "why?" question today before responding is highly advised!

Discussion Preparation -- The Short Story/Poetry "Unit" and "The Masque of the Red Death" Pre-reading (10-15 mins.)
--Pick up a copy of the document with pictures and lines on it from the front table.  Then, take a thoughtful look at each of the pictures.  With Edgar Allan Poe's work, one can expect allegory and symbolism.  What does each picture suggest to you/what might each "thing" pictured represent within the story?  Write your ideas on the lines provided.  (For example, next to the picture labeled "Prospero [the host of the masquerade]", I might write the following: wealth).  In order to be more fully prepared for discussion, jotting down responses to the "why?" question would also be beneficial, as in the following example: Prospero looks and sounds like "prosperous", which basically means wealthy and successful.

Transition (2-3 mins.)
--
form an alphabetical-by-middle-name circle out of the desks--you, of course, can talk when forming this circle!

Unit Introduction/Looking Ahead/Discussion -- The Short Story/Poetry "Unit" and "The Masque of the Red Death" Pre-reading (25-30 mins.)
--ice breaker/teambuilding: two Artifact Bags
--"dump" potential meanings for each of the pictures on the front board
  • I WILL ASSESS CONTRIBUTIONS VIA THE "DISCUSSION CONTRIBUTION RATING SCALE".
Transition (2-3 mins.)--DID NOT GET TO IN 4 ACE (STUDENTS WILL PICK UP STORIES NEXT CLASS IF THEY DID NOT ALREADY DO SO)
--re-column the desks
--pick up the "Short Story Analysis Sheet", a story map (if desired), and a copy of "The Masque of the Red Death"

HW Time (remainder of class)
--finish "gearing up" for reading "The Masque..." together via the "Before reading" section of the "Short Story Analysis Sheet"
--active/purposeful (oral? independent?) first-draft reading of “The Masque…” (use “Short Story Analysis Sheet”)--keep our ideas from earlier in class in mind

HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete a total of 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 10/5.  If you fail to appropriately train between now and the administration of Vocabulary Quiz #2, you will not be permitted to take the quiz (see the "Membean Routine" document).
Writing
--Begin/continue thinking about your short story.  The final draft of the assignment will be due before you know it!
HW (Class Preparation)
--Finish your active/purposeful reading of "The Masque..." and consider actively/purposefully rereading the story as well.  Be prepared for an assessment and/or a discussion about the reading two classes from now.
--You might want to review the eight parts of speech prior to two classes from now. ;)
Miscellaneous
--Read your free reading book for at least 15 minutes between now and next class. ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS.
--Enjoy the long weekend--you really only get so many of 'em! :)
