English 9--1/9/2014

Jump Off (2 mins.)
--Open up your notebook and date the page (1/9/2014).  We will begin class today with another quick write.  Can someone briefly explain what a quick write is?  (Remember that we did one at the beginning of class last time!)

S. the C. (8 mins.)

--The Artist Formerly Known as Ramillia Kyza still needs to revise and meet with Mr. Martin for the Cumulative Writing Portfolio (s/he has been and will continue to be referred for central detention)
--Reminder: The culminating assignment of the Odyssey Unit is writing a personal narrative in which you apply the monomyth formula to your own life/personal journey.  At this point, you should have a solid idea/outline and be ready to write!
--agenda/HW
--quickly go over the purpose/nature of quick writes again

Writing Activity -- Quick Write (15 mins.)

--sample quick write read based on today's prompt
--prompt shared:

What has been the most difficult experience in your life since September 2013?  Write about it!

--timer set for 8 minutes...GO!!!

--For HW, reread your quick write.  How can this writing piece help you with your Monomyth Writing Assignment (if at all)?

Transition (2 mins.)

--Pick up the following items from the front table:
  • the document titled "Plan of Attack for Annotating--Book Ten/Book Twelve"
  • the annotated copy of page 928 of Odyssey
  • a copy of the next section of the story ("Book Twelve: Sea Perils and Defeat")
Reading Activity -- "Book Twelve: Sea Perils and Defeat" (40-45 mins. total)
--read through the "Plan of Attack for Annotating--Book Ten/Book Twelve" document together as a reminder for how to go about annotating the text (you will not be completing a close reading document for this section of the reading, either, but you will still be responding to standards-based multiple choice questions following your work with the text) (3 mins.)
--read through Mr. Martin's annotations for page 928 of Odyssey where he has implemented  these "plans of attack" by turning your attention to the second document that you just picked up from the front table (5 mins.)
--quiet/independent reading/annotating of "Book Twelve: Sea Perils and Defeat" (20-25 mins.)
--whole-group share-out via a drawing of cards ("One annotation I have is...") (8-10 mins.)

Brain Break -- Andrei Konchalovsky's The Odyssey (15 mins.)
--view the following videos from YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5OERqTniro
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpB3sOtmkhU

--FYI: These film clips contain some gore; however, the special effects are such that you should all be okay!

Closure (time permitting) -- Self-Assessment
--Take your "Learning Standards--Unit Items and Progress Self-Assessment" and "Learning Standards" documents out. Mindfully add items to the "Learning Standards--Unit Items and Progress Self-Assessment" document based upon today's class.

HW
--Continue bringing any materials that you have pertaining to the Monomyth Writing Assignment to class.  We will be "workshopping" in class between now and the due date of the assignment, which is Friday, January 17th (just over a week from today).
--Finish reading/annotating "Book Twelve: Sea Perils and Defeat" before next class as per our "plan of attack" (if you do not finish in class).
--Study your annotations for "Book Ten: The Grace of the Witch" and "Book Twelve: Sea Perils and Defeat," as a multiple choice assessment will occur next class.  These ongoing multiple choice assessments will be scored, and your overall grade will be reported as your Odyssey Unit Exam grade.
--The English 9 Midterm Examination will take place on Monday, January 27th from 8:45 to 10:15.
--BRING YOUR VOCABULARY BOOK TO CLASS NEXT TIME.
