English 10 Honors--5/9/2018 & 5/10/2018

Jump Off
--If the writing component of your Memoir Project upon which I can use the "The Four Cs of Quality Academic Writing" framework for scoring and feedback purposes is not part of your creation itself, place your writing piece in the black basket on the front table.
--Please clear your desk of all but a clean sheet of paper and a pen.  Write your name at the top of the sheet of paper, and number the paper 1-7, skipping a line after each number.

"60/40" Reading Assessment -- The Alchemist up to the End of Page 47
--When you finish, open your notebook to a clean page and put the date (5/9/2018 [ACE] or 5/10/2018 [BDF]) in the margin.  Then, jot down responses to the following questions:
  • Several of you have now almost finished an AP course and are gearing up to take an AP exam (or have observed peers/friends go through the experience).  As a result, I am sure you have all sorts of opinions.  What are the pros and cons of AP courses?  What is your "why" with regard to the AP experience--why do you take or plan to take (or not take or not plan to take) AP courses?

Take-Home Assessment -- Article of the Week #5
--create a t-chart on the front board in response to the first question from the "Jump Off"
  • What is your "why"?
--Transition
  • Pick up both of the following from the front table:
    • AOW #5
    • the "Methods of Refutation" sheet
--prereading
  • What should we do before we even start reading these articles?
    • "take care of business" as per our brainstorming
--purposeful oral reading of first article
  • What is John Tierney's claim?
  • What are some of the counterclaims that can be made in response to Tierney's claim?
    • Consider both our purposeful reading of the article and our t-chart from earlier in the block.
--discuss the article via volunteers (and, if necessary, a drawing of cards)
--purposeful oral reading of second article

Work Block/HW Time -- Memoir Project/AoW #5/Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist
--work time/reading time as per parameters established in the past

HW (Class Preparation)
--Complete 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 5/17.  If you fail to appropriately train between now and the administration of Vocabulary Quiz #6, you will not be permitted to take the quiz until you catch up (see the "Membean Routine" document).
HW (Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete your best work as directed for Article of the Week #5.  Your active/purposeful reading and paragraph response are due for submission at the beginning of class on Tuesday, 5/15 [ACE] or Wednesday, 5/16 [BDF]).
HW (Class Preparation/Take-Home Assessment)
--Read The Alchemist (up to the end of page 87).  Demonstrate your best skill level in reading actively/purposefully via the Post-it Note strategy, and expect any or all of the following to occur during our next class block:
  • collection of your Post-its for assessment purposes
  • a "60/40" reading assessment
  • a discussion geared around your Post-its
HW (Project/Writing)
--Your Memoir Project creation must be submitted to the "Memoir Project--2018" Google Classroom no later than 11:59 PM on Thursday, 5/10.

--Continue thinking about (and, quite frankly, consider beginning working on) the End-of-Course Assignment--you do not want to wait too long to get started on this!
Miscellaneous
--Read at least 10 pages of your free reading book (memoir still?!) between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!  This final marking period, I will randomly check for books and include your level of preparation in my reporting via Schooltool.
*I AM AVAILABLE AFTER SCHOOL PRETTY MUCH DAILY FROM NOW UNTIL THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND AM MORE THAN HAPPY TO WORK WITH INDIVIDUALS ONE-ON-ONE (ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE STRUGGLING--BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF AND TAKE INITIATIVE!).*

BACKBURNER:

Transition #3
--Spend a few minutes reflecting upon your "life to date," your years from birth to the present:
  • When you were "little", what did you want to be when you "growed up"?
  • What memorable experiences have you had?
    • Is there a past experience that you can completely and totally visualize (a flashbulb memory, if you will) when you close your eyes?
  • What is the most important lesson you have learned?  How did you learn this lesson?
  • What has been the overall climax?
  • What problems have you faced?
    • What has been the most difficult experience so far?
  • What individuals have impacted you, and how?
Teambuilder/The Alchemist Novella Unit Introduction--Part 1 -- Live Wire
Objective:
  • to create a visual illustration of your life
Instructions:
  • Pick up materials from the front table (up to four pipe cleaners).
  • Use materials to construct a visual illustration of your "life to date": the significant trends, patterns, and events of your years thus far (think about your brainstorming from "Transition #3"!).
  • Once your "Live Wire" is finished, "sneak in" a little more free reading until everyone has finished.
