Jump Off (15-20 mins.)
--Pick up the "English 10 Honors--Literature and Nonfiction Terms/Concepts 2016-2017--Assessment--Terms/Concepts #61-80" document from the front table.  Complete the quiz quietly and independently back at your assigned seat.  Good luck!  When you finish taking the quiz, follow the directions below:

  • Place your quiz in the black basket on the front table.
  • Engage in free reading until all students have finished taking the quiz.

*DURING THIS TIME, I WILL BE AROUND TO WRITE DOWN BOOK TITLES.*

S. the C. (5 mins.)
--agenda/HW

Transition (2-3 mins.)
--venture down to the Computer Lab

Assessment -- Vocabulary Quiz #1 (Fri, Sep 23, 2016) (10-15 mins?)
--Unless I inform you that you are not permitted to do so due to lack of training, log in to Membean and complete the assessment as directed.  Good luck!
--If you finish before your peers, "sneak in" a little more free reading while you wait! :)

Writing Workshop -- Thematic Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews (remainder of class)
--What is a theme statement?
  • briefly engage in discussion as per the brainstorming/thinking that you did following the quiz that took place at the beginning of last class
  • IT IS IN YOUR BEST INTEREST TO JOT DOWN ANY NOTES THAT END UP ON THE COMPUTER LAB WHITEBOARD!
--Transition
  • pick up a copy of the "Theme Statements--The Do Nots and The Dos" document, which contains "official" information about theme statements (English 9 review)
  • take out the notes that you have taken about your partner
  • open up a document (Microsoft Word 2010 or Google Docs), preferably the one that is MLA formatted (if you had any luck with that debacle last class!)
--two-three introductions from sample essays from the past shared:
  • What does it take to craft a quality introduction?
  • List of beginning methods crafted on the Computer Lab whiteboard and copied into notebooks
--quick-write your hook (10 minutes)--Do we need to review how quick writes work?
--review the purpose, structure, etc. of a thesis statement--Do you have a quality thesis statement yet?  Should you? (time permitting)

--Transition (time permitting)
  • Take out any notes that you have about your partner.
  • Get in pairs formed on Day 1 of class.
--in partnerships, continue conducting interviews/taking notes/developing theme statements:
  • REMINDER: YOU MUST INCLUDE A DIRECT QUOTATION FROM YOUR PARTNER IN YOUR ESSAY!
HW (Practice/Take-Home Assessment)
--Complete a total of 45 minutes of Membean training as directed before 11:59 PM on Thursday, 9/29.  If you fail to appropriately train between now and the administration of Vocabulary Quiz #2, you will not be permitted to take the quiz (see the "Membean Routine" document).
Writing/Take-Home Assessment
--Prior to next class, reread your hook written during today's Writing Workshop block.  Make any necessary changes in order to improve this hook.  Also, if you are ready to do so, craft both a bridge and thesis statement for your essay.
--On the same document as your hook written during today's Writing Workshop block, write a second hook using an entirely different method.  The quick list from today's class should help you think of an alternative way to begin.  Also, consider visiting the following links for assistance:
  • http://grammar.about.com/od/developingessays/a/How-To-Begin-An-Essay-13-Engaging-Strategies-With-Examples.htm
Next class (Tuesday, 9/27), you will submit both of your hooks for me to read in order to provide commentary (albeit limited!).  (As with your other hook, write your bridge and thesis statement, too, if you are ready to do so.)
Writing
--The Thematic Essay Writing Assignment--Partner Interviews essay (your best effort) is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, 9/29 (just under one week from today) typed in proper MLA format.  If you still need to gather additional information about your partner, do so!
Miscellaneous
--Read your free reading book for at least 15 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS!
