English 9--11/16/2015

Jump Off (3-5 mins.)
--Turn in Article of the Week #4 by placing your best work in the black basket on the front table.
--Pick up a colored pencil from the front table.
--If you have your vocabulary book, open it up to page 52. Look through the list of words and put a mark next to all of the words that you are pretty confident about knowing already.
*DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME, I WILL RETURN YOUR UNIT #3 VOCABULARY QUIZ WITH THE ROUGH GOAL YOU SET STAPLED TO IT.*

S. the C. (10-15 mins.)
--pronounce each of the Unit #4 vocabulary words and look at definitions/synonyms/"tricks" for learning and remembering via PowerPoint
--reflect upon your performance on the Unit #3 vocabulary quiz one last time--shade in a bar on your bar graph
  • If your score falls within the ineffective range (0-64) on this particular vocabulary quiz, you likely did not carefully follow directions and/or follow our classroom commitment of maintaining good study habits.  As I noted last week, I cannot stress enough how important care and effort are and will continue to be as you move throughout high school into adulthood.  Let's keep working together on these qualities! :)

--agenda/HW

Transition (5-8 mins.)
--When you finish the last task described above, turn in your half-index card, your Unit #3 vocabulary quiz, and your colored pencil at the front of the classroom.
--Take out your notebook and date the page (11/16/2015).  Then, respond in the form of a bulleted list to the question/prompt below:
  • What do you know about writing a well-developed paragraph?  LIST EVERYTHING YOU ALREADY KNOW FROM PAST YEARS OF ELA AND ENGLISH CLASS.

Assessment/On-Demand Writing Preparation (15ish mins./until 45ish mins. remain)
--share out and categorize via "The Four Cs of Quality Writing"

Transition (2 mins.)
--Pick up the "Mid-Mini-Unit Assessment (RL.3RL.5, and RL.1)/Writing Assignment" document from the front table.  Also, take out your copy of St. Lucy's..." as you will need it in order to complete today's writing task.

Assessment/On-Demand Writing -- "St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" Mini-Unit Mid-Mini-Unit Assessment (RL.3, RL.5, and RL.1)/Writing Assignment (remainder of class)
--oral purposeful reading of the first page and prompt
--Q & A
--complete the assessment/writing assignment quietly and independently--good luck!
  • Look to showcase your best writing skills, bearing in mind today's preparation block.  When assessing your writing, I will use the data that I gather to further determine what additional writing instruction is necessary between now and the End-of-Mini-Unit Assessment/Writing Assignment.
--When you finish your best work, place your document in the black basket on the front table.  Engage in free reading for the remainder of the class block.

HW (Class Preparation)
--Begin preparing for the Unit #4 vocabulary quiz, which will take place this Friday, 11/20, bearing in mind your rough goal set during today's class.  Next time that we meet, we will continue working with this week's words, and if you already have most of the words mastered or close to being mastered, you will be in good shape!  REMEMBER THAT WORDS FROM PREVIOUS UNITS ARE "FAIR GAME" ON ANY VOCABULARY QUIZ THEREAFTER.
--If you are still struggling to find success on the vocabulary quizzes, take the initiative to meet with me during homeroom or after school so that we can put together a plan of action!
--Bring your vocabulary book next class--please do not forget!
--Read your free reading book for at least 15 minutes between now and next class.  ALWAYS BRING YOUR FREE READING BOOK TO CLASS.  You have up until the first week of December to finish your book.
