English 9--3/14/2014

Jump Off
--Pick up an index card from the front table.  On the index card, write something about "The Homecoming from The Odyssey" that will help us do some last-minute review.  Here are considerations for what you might write:
  • a significant direct quotation with an explanation ("This is significant because...")
  • a purposeful piece of diction with an explanation ("This is the perfect word choice because...")
  • a theme statement with paraphrased support
  • a question that when answered will help clarify something about which you are confused
  • a question about authorial purpose
Tip: Your closure tasks completed prior to last class might come in handy when thinking of something to write on your index card!
--IF NECESSARY, MR. MARTIN WILL MODEL THE TASK ASSIGNED ABOVE.
--If you were absent last class, submit your closure task from 3/5 (e.g., "RL.1 Task"), which should be your best work, by placing the completed sheet in the black basket on the front table.
*Mr. Martin will be around to collect your index cards*

Transition -- pick up the "Odyssey Unit--'The Homecoming' Standards-based Multiple Choice (Unit Exam)" document from the front table

Assessment -- Odyssey Unit--"The Homecoming" Standards-based Multiple Choice (Unit Exam)
--purposefully annotate the multiple choice questions themselves--then, go back through your copies of the Odyssey readings and purposefully reread accordingly
--answer each of the questions
--When finished, submit your assessment.  Then, take out your notebook, date the page (3/14/2014), and label this section of your notes "Dragonsong--The Gist of the Foreword"

Dragonsong Unit--Introductory Activity -- The Foreword: Close Reading/Notetaking
--first read: read-aloud (rationale explained)--get the gist (What does this directive mean again?)--jot the gist in your notebook at each of Mr. Martin's stopping points
--What is the gist of the Foreword?--discuss/take down additional notes as Mr. Martin writes on the whiteboard
--Transition
  • Column-by-column, pick up a copy of Dragonsong from the front of the classroom/write down book numbers.
  • Also, pick up a copy of the "The Facts of Pern" sheet.
--material analysis: "The Facts of Pern" sheet (defining our purpose for second read)
--second read: independent reading as per defined purpose
--volunteers come up to the front board and write information on the SmartBoard
--go over notes--make sure that your personal notes are complete
--When finished with this activity, place this page in your binder--this is the start of the section of your binder devoted to Dragonsong Unit materials.

Closure -- Whip Around
--Think of one "thing" you learned in class today.  (If you need to write your key learning down so that you don't forget, please do so!)

--Toss the ball around the classroom from one to another sharing learnings.

HW
--Finish the remaining aspects of the activity titled "The Foreword: Close Reading/Notetaking" if we run out of class time.  The expectation is that you have mastered the contents of the "The Facts of Pern" sheet prior to the beginning of next class.
--YOU MUST BRING YOUR DRAGONSONG BOOK TO CLASS EVERY DAY BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF THE DRAGONSONG UNIT.  IF YOU DO NOT HAVE YOUR BOOK, EXPECT CONSEQUENCES FOR LACK OF PREPARATION.
--BRING YOUR VOCABULARY BOOK TO CLASS NEXT WEEK AS WELL.
--Enjoy the weekend--you only get so many of 'em.
